Sorry, not sure if this was discussed or not, but I was interested in this:

ma, wo ting nimen de

妈,我听你们的

..which is translated as:

Mom, I agree with you

...It reminds me ting1hua4...listen to words=do as you're told.

The point of interest for me is this. The direct translation of the above could be : mum, I hear you [as in, I hear what you are saying]. In English, this could imply that you are conveying that you hear what someone is saying, here where they are coming from. It shows some understanding. It perhaps even goes so far as to understand their viewpoint. But for mine it doesn't necessarily convey agreement. But, am I right in assuming that such an expression in Chinese would always convey agreement? If so, is there a way to convey that you understand someone's viewpoint without necessarily agreeing with it? [to just say, I hear what you're saying]

yeah, I guess any word could have a similar graph. What would be interesting would be breaking it down by language and showing it as a "per capita" usage....I mean graphing it's relative frequency of use in that language.

" "Oh" to her advantage. Its almost as if she is saying Oh, I didnt realize that mom, thank you for telling me this, but really she's not buying any of it. "

haha, yeah exactly....beautifully put RJ :)

"focus on being brokenhearted rather than puzzling over vocabulary and grammar"

在中文怎么说“ignorance is bliss"?

[how do you say in Chinese]

可能是:

【perhaps it's"】:

无知是幸福

【如果中文没有这样的说法的话,可能还可以说在英文我们这样说。。。。If Chinese doesn't have this kind of expression, perhaps you can still say that we have this saying in English]

怪不得这个女孩子觉得很累。。一定是我们的朋友董倩倩。。。她由于老在体育馆看这个李强打球。。真无聊。。那当然会觉得累死了。 反正,她应该把心思放在学习上, 不要跟男孩子谈恋爱

[no wonder this lass feels tired...it's definitely our friend Dong Qianqian...because she's always at the gym watching this Li Qiang play basketball....really boring....so of course she feels tired in the extreme. Anyway, she should put her mind to her studies and forget about dating]

haha, you know, I'm not kidding when I say this, but a couple of hours after posting this, I nearly fell over when someone about your age said to me "be there or be square". I couldn't believe it. Such a coincidence. It's not like it's said everyday or anything. I guess it was probably cool to say once and it's certainly not that anymore, but it is still said...I think the vibe just changes a little.

must say, I prefer this bujianbusan though anyway. A more useful expression, and very apt for a crowded place.

what the appeal for her in watching him play basketball is, I don't know. You'd think he'd have a better date on offer for her. I guess at that age their opportunities are limited though, hehe.
