says the internal dimensions of the basketball ring must be between 450mm and 459mm
so these official sites seem to confirm the quoted diameters are both referring to the internal dimensions of the hoop. I was a little surprised to read that the internal dimensions of the basketball hoop can vary by 9mm..is this common knowledge amongst our American friends?

October 31, 2011 at 12:24 PMI was waiting to be picked up on that ...honestly [in fact was hoping I would so I could get to the bottom of it....so thanks mate]. I was under the impression that the ball was a little larger [in basketball] and that the hoop was a little larger but wasn't certain and so actually googled it to double check before I posted this morning. I found an official looking site that said the hoop/ring size was the same. But the majority of sites seemed to confirm what I had thought, and more importantly, the only sites that gave the actual dimensions seemed to demostrate that a netball ring is 15inches vs 18 inches for a basketball ring, which coincided with other sites that did not give the actual dimentions but said there was a 3 inch difference. So I'm not disagreeing with you ump, but could you set me straight on what the dimentions really are?
The only way that both could be right is if the actual internal dimensions are the same [the hole size is the same diameter] but the basketball hoop itself is a thicker ring making it's outside dimeter larger, but I'm not sure that that is what is going on here.
Perhaps it also depends on the level of the competition. I know little kids play to different dimensions.

..how can you decipher it? ...and are you saying you have the name worked out but won't disclose it to avoid a spoiler?
