the 发 represents "send". This is how the mail will be given..it will be sent.
"I guess it is not "complete" enough to say 给我一个邮件?"
...no, I don't think it is complete without the 发. I guess without it, it may imply that someone is directly handing you the mail.

November 2, 2011 at 11:35 AMHeck, those basketball hoops are so big, people can even dunk themselves through 'em as shown here:

November 2, 2011 at 11:21 AM"What do you think the backboard adds to the equation?"
oh undoubtedly makes it easier. Gives 'em two ways to get it in. Nah, more. They could go for nothin' but net. Straight in off the backboard, or also hit the ring and bounce back to the backboard [perhaps up to several times, hehe] and then in. Heck, how could it miss really?
Hey, I've got a whole bunch of other factors up my sleeve as to why it's harder to get a goal in netball than basketball and thus requires more skill. I was hoping to fire up our American friends and then use them then, but no bites so far :)

November 2, 2011 at 11:15 AM"it is not like you to be wrong with the facts"
..nah, nah, I'm sure I've made plenty of gaffs on this site alone for all to see, hehe. meiguanxi.
"there was no question on the umpiring exam about comparing netball and basketball"
..'course not. You only had to know about netball.
"I must have been playing with the smaller size when I was young"
..sure, there are smaller non standard basketball rings out there, but you may have had the challenge of using a basketball in a netball ring. Not much basketball happening in Oz when you were a youngun, right?
"you can rate the information"
hehe, yeah, there was once talk of having something like that here on the CPod boards. That got me scared hehe.
"I might be less likely to throw in my two cents"
..now that would be a shame. Right or wrong it's fun to be questioned, to nut things out or debate them. Thanks mate. :)

November 2, 2011 at 6:27 AMHey thanks Mantid. I'll keep an eye out for them. Great to have a recommendation. :)

November 2, 2011 at 6:16 AMthanks Zhen. I nearly said that my guess was that 消失在 was acting like a chunk, and no sooner had I posted than I recalled that I thought I'd seen 放在了. Great to get an authoritative answer anyhow, rather than me conjecturing, hehe.

November 2, 2011 at 5:14 AMEven if you look at it from the point of view of what percentage the diameter of the ball is of the diameter of the ring, the maximum for basketball is 55% vs 57% for netball.
Another way of looking at it could be this:
basketball hoop has minimum area of 1590 cm^2, and the mens basketball a maximum of 484 cm^2 , so the cross sectional area of the ball represents a maximum of about 30% of the area of the hoop
whereas a netball hoop has an area of 1134xm^2 and the netball has a minimum cross sectional area of 378 cm^2 which represents that a netball's cross sectional area is a minimum of 33.3% of the area of the hoop.
Now of course these measurements take us to the boundary of a nothing but net situation, and of course the ball could hit the hoop and still either bounce or roll in, but this will depend on a number of factors such as trajectory and velocity, bounce properties of the ball, ball surface friction coefficient etc etc. But obviously [unless there was an amazing amount of spin and a high co-efficient of friction] the centre of the ball could not go beyond the edge of the ring, and in reality would have to be somewhat less than this. But for argument sake, we could take the radius of the ball and add that twice [for opposite sides fo the ring] to the diameter of the ring to represent an absolute maximum diameter the ball has to come down within to have any chance of being successful.
For basketball this would mean the maximum diameter for the tightest ring becomes 698mm for a 248mm diameter ball [ball diameter 35% of diameter of possible successful circle, 3826cm^2 483cm^2 ball, ball area 12.6% of shooting area], for the smallest ball [446cm^2] the diameter of the shooting zone would be 688.4 [area 3722cm^2]..thus the ball 12% of the shooting area.
For netball, the largest ball [401cm^2] would thus have a 606mm diameter area to aim for, or 2884cm^2 [area of ball 13.9% of area of shooting zone] , and 599.6mm diameter, or 2823cm^2 for the smallest ball [378cm^2] to aim at [13.4% of shooting area]
Thus at least 0.8% difference.

November 2, 2011 at 6:56 PMhey mantid,
Thanks again mate for the recommendation. I was wondering when I saw the mention of Jet Li, but just looked it up and confirms it looks like a movie you can get on DVD. It definitely looks worth a look, so thanks for that, but I was asking about 武侠 books. I guess this also comes in novel form? ...and is typical of the genre of 武侠 books?
