"corkers"

...I love that word and well applied here. I was slightly surprised to read you use it as it's one of those words that I would have suspected maybe Aussie slang but wasn't too sure. Is it commonly used by Brits? ...I can't remember...

"confident today's new UI release will also be successful in this regard"

...I would normally agree with you on this, but I'm not quite as sure given the timing is so close to the creepy guy lesson....folk may be out of steam for the time being...we'll see though...

“lesson of the year”

pretz, you make some good points mate, but if you read carefully I didn't suggest it was "lesson of the year" but rather that it could make it onto the "lessons of the year list"....an important distinction. And what I specifically had in mind was the thread I have started at the end of the last couple of years that had several categories [you may recall]. There's usually one that has something to do with generating the most discussion...something along those lines.

"Maybe the most enticing thread would be one that pulled the most lurkers out to start posting"

I think everything under the sun has been tried at one stage or another to encourage lurkers and there was even a lot of discussion about it at one point [ I think before they went to this current website layout]. But most lurkers are happy and comfortable I believe where they are. The only thing I've seen generate much of a sprout of faces is not cultural or language stuff, but fundamental interaction with CPod stuff....ie something to do with a major change in how the website functions or to do with subscriptions....something involving major change anyhow. But lessons...nah, most lurkers want to remain lurkers. But ok, I'll grant you there may be some that entice a few of those lurkers who are contemplative....semi lurkers if you will. I agree...it would be interesting to work out which threads those were on. Why can I not stop thinking of our old friend with the crab avatar? hehe

"My vote is for the Booty Call lesson"

...but there you go...isn't it coming back to the same factors here? [as RJ has pointed out above]

oh, ok, thanks for clarifying for me. hehe, you're none too fond of too many food lessons hey old friend...same issues here right? hehe. I've seen Pimsleur mentioned plenty of times over the years, but it's never been something I've used or even looked at. Was it just written for business travelers? I have a feeling that is their main focus right? ..because as a tourist I'd have no interest in the business related dialogue , and eating would be right up there on the most important things to learn list.

Hey Rachel,

"I certainly don't relish being in a situation where being the sole representative of a female point of view"

...I've only just caught up with your latest post now, and I'm sorry to hear that the discussion became uncomfortable for you. Firstly let me say I am truly sorry if I contributed to that discomfiture in any way...it was certainly not my intention. I greatly enjoy humour and I also love detective type stuff and I guess I was in Litanzhang mode and having fun analysing what was going on. I also like a friendly debate. Please don't take such postulations too seriously [at least from me]...it was fiction after all as you rightly say. But rest assured I will trouble you no further with my theories etc...I realise they have no doubt become rather tiresome.

"especially since I doubt I'm changing any minds"

...well in my case you didn't need to because when it comes to real life and what you have written about it [which was beautifully and adeptly expressed I might add] I completely agree with you. I am a great defender of woman's rights...I think all women should be treated with the utmost respect and I do not condone anything that would make them feel threatened or violated in any way and I do not believe there is any excuse for such behaviour [such as the way they dress for example]. Rest assured, you have an ally in me on this front even though I am just a mere male. :)

"How novel of them mate"

...hehe

"I wonder what the actual author of this dialogue makes of our in-depth (over?!) analysis from the poddies above!"

...I think CPod have commonly been deliberately provocative. I think their bottom line is whatever is going to create most interest, keep most people happy and ultimately bring in new and renewed subscriptions. I think they trade off being young and hip and current, and try to be as different as possible from a boring textbook and thus push a few boundaries. I also think this particular author John is a pretty fun guy with a sense of humour and suspect he probably has a quiet chuckle to himself on occasion at the crazy posts here, but he doesn't mistake that at the end of the day it is a business and whatever is best for business is foremost. So bottom line I think they'd be somewhat chuffed as long as there's nothing nasty, and as long as no-one complains. But anyhow for mine, these threads are much more interesting than when the boards go dead, but as I've said before, folk will complain either way.

"Oh, and my congratulations also, I think you definitely win the gold medal for cpod's longest ever post with that one a few above, hehe"

...It's long alright, but I think there have been others longer. I think there were some debates with xiaohu in the old days that got pretty long, but also the first thing that popped into my head that I think has definitely been longer has been several very long academic posts by tingyun [or at least they seem substantially longer because they require a lot more thinking ,hehe ]
