I was a little surprised in the Opening Ceremony when we were informed that it was the first Olympics where all countries have had women competing. This was because Saudi Arabia had a woman competing for the first time. I didn't catch her competing, but here's an article:

Funnily enough, this lesson is showing up in my itunes as being released on 08/08/2012 which would make me wonder if the release date was deliberately exactly 4 years from the Beijing Olympics, except for the fact that even here in Australia we're still 40 minutes from ticking over into the 8th and the lesson was released about 12 hours ago [and also on the website here it is correctly showing the release date as the 7th]. Does anyone else have this release date discrepancy in itunes?

stavros,

"This kind of phenonmen is universal. These girls could be in a bar in New York, London, Paris or Sydney"

...agreed

"the exact same scenario might happen with different cultural characteristics"

...yeah, except not so sure about the lajiaoshui....that was a bit over the top....but of course given this is fictional it's fine as it was for dramatic effect, entertainment and it's the dramatic stuff that's easier to remember language learning wise I think.

"a confident young women is a good thing"

...absolutely...but confidence is one thing, outright aggressive is another, 我觉得

"However, sadly, we seem not to have quite resolved the initial debate about whether the line was knowing humour"

haha, I beg to differ my friend. It was knowing hypocrisy, and I guess it depends on your sense of humour, but I think that makes for a certain type of humour.

FOR SHAME!

...hehe, I am ashamed, but it's been a day of shame, so I'm growing into the Rouge...maybe I need to go crawl under some bar, hehe. Thanks again for your amusing comments here...entertaining stuff ,hehe.

Wot, so no Chhattisgarh...

...I think I spy where you got off on the wrong track mate....as Chhattisgarh is one of India's big steel producers, you misunderstood the whole "blue steel" reference....see above for explanation ;)

oh mate, I'm on a roll of faux pas's. Bumbling baba...which is why Chauncey Gardner has always appealed to me so much...say little or nothing and you will appear wise, hehe [whereas I say too much, and voila, hehe]

95% of the time when I write in Pinyin it's because I'm at a computer that can't write Hanzi....in these cases it's usually short and simple with what I thought were obvious well known words that context would show what it was. Where I think it's unclear I include the tones [but yeah, guilty as charged have been lazy on the tones the other times]. The other 5% of the time I'm just being lazy but it's usually even shorter and sweeter...like single words. Can't newbies still write in Pinyin? It's usually newbie level stuff I'm writing at those points I think, and anything unclear that someone's actually interested in, one can always ask for clarification.

ok guys point noted. But I will also say that using pinyin is using chinese to some extent, and we also get in trouble for not using Chinese in the upper levels, get in trouble for using Chinese at the lower levels. We can find that it's a little tricky to navigate around this site without upsetting someone. But anyhow, ok, fair enough, I'll try and avoid it. I'm now worried some stuff will slip out unconsciously as I've developed a bit of a habit of chucking it in there from time to time....I hope I'll be forgiven if I accidentally transgress. Cheers :)

“After their sudden exits, they were replaced by women’s doubles teams from Australia, Canada, Russia and South Africa”

。。。looks like we'll have to take whatever crumbs we can, hehe

RJ,

"ok mr (nothing gets past you) olympic"

...hey, I never said, implied, or even thought that. Plenty gets past me as you know [hehe, I actually think you think everything gets past me]. I don't have Foxtel [cable telly] and thus just have to rely on the free to air coverage here which is pretty limited. Most stuff is on in the middle of the night. I usually watch very little telly [yeah, if I do have time to myself it's often on CPod, hehe] but do like to watch the Olympics. But as it's on in the middle of the night, it often means you have to watch replays, and the journo's can't help 'emselves but to tell you the result before you watch it !! Zaogao !!

“Due to the round robin method of advancement certain teams tried to lose individual matches in order to gain a weaker opponent in the next round. A little chess with your badminton? I think they were pretty hard on them actually but I guess their efforts to lose were really obvious and angered the crowd. ”

噢,明白了。。。嗯,为了观众们真倒霉。。。多谢你的解释和连接 :)

[oh, gotcha...yeah, must have been really disappointing/bad luck for the audience...thanks heaps for your explanation and link]

"even if there was enough left unsaid in your comment for the debate to go as to whether Weiwei's alleged 'hypocrisy' was carefully fashioned for the purposes of humour, or more pedagogical opportunism!"

hehe, man you really don't want to part with that beer. ;)
