August 8, 2012 at 11:33 PM精彩Zhen! I was planning on PM'ing you today if I didn't see you 出现,as I knew you'd have some very valuable input if you were aware of it, so thanks so much for making an appearance and giving us your 看法 So much good stuff in there, the whole post is great, but I just want to comment on some of the gems:
"my not leering making no difference to her"
就是。。as I've said before, some have their radar set way too high...I think in proportion to their vanity. Looking at the world through tainted glasses
"a reaction that is rather insulting once you're on the receiving end of it"
就是。。are everyone's feelings being considered here? ..or is one being self centred?
"and is entirely non-verbal so you can't even protest that they're misinterpreting a meaningless, or friendly-interest, glance"
exactly
"But so I'm sympathetic to all such innocent people of both sexes and all ages who are instantly branded creeps"
...exactly again. How is it that I've posted so much on this above without getting this point across, and you've come along in one post and put it all so clearly and eloquently. These were my thoughts also, but I obviously couldn't express them as you have. I was wanting to make the point in the debate, that one should not assume that because I'm a guy I'm automatically on the guys side...as I don't view things that way...I like to be impartial and call a spade a spade, but if I had some bias it would be towards protecting the fairer sex.
"I agree that ogling is invasive, especially when the offender shows that he/she knows the subject is very uncomfortable and still persists"
。。。就是。。。完全同意。。。你说得很好
感谢朋友 :)

August 8, 2012 at 12:41 PM"That's what got me wondering in the first place"
...yes, nowt wrong with wondering. Sometimes I too wonder why no-one has commented on stuff [but sometimes the boards have been so dead that it doesn't matter how provocative or comment worthy something is, it's like everyone is asleep and unrousable, hehe] . But I now know you're referring to John and Jenny's commentary here and I don't necessarily read too much into it if I think something is obvious, like the usual obvious twist [because to me that's like explaining a joke...it becomes unfunny at that point and loses it's potency]...it's there to let the poddies run with it, and run with it we did !! hehe. But having said that, I can perfectly understand, that what seemed like obvious hypocrisy to you and me, that it would leave you wondering ...huh, am I the only one who sees this, when it seems to have gone uncommented on.
"I thought that foundation stone of our little tet-a-tet was understood"
...not by me. I'm too lazy to go back and check, but my recollection is you got the ball rolling by asking why it hadn't been brought up amongst the 75 [I think it was at that time] comments on the discussion tab here...in other words by the poddies, not in John's commentary. But you know what, I'm feeling I may have missed that. I know that I said more than once that I don't recall what was said in the podcast about it, and I kept meaning to check but didn't get round to it till today, and I don't recall you responding to that by saying it wasn't commented on. Sorry if I missed that. But as I said, I personally don't think that reflects too much. Also, at newbie level, and at ellie I think also, I think they squeeze as much discussion..linguistic and cultural out of the shorter and simpler dialogues, but the higher the level the more that goes uncommented on....while there is always some cultural/ social commentary, I think they are more focussed on making sure the key language and grammar points are covered. A pretty good balance is struck I think, because I think cultural discussions can go on forever and I think they just make enough commentary to teach a little, give a little cultural insight, but also spark off a good discussion. A good formula.
"Ah well, we got there in the end, eh!?"
yes mate, I think so, now at least, hehe
"but we got to a point where we agreed that it was rollicking good fun to be discussing it!:) "
我完全同意朋友, 谢谢:)

August 8, 2012 at 7:37 AM“So I was thinking that maybe "most commented" is a simple and easy metric, but not the best.”
。。我同意
“Now how do you objectively measure "best"?”
good question. That's why with those threads I like to break it down into as many categories as possible....not sure what they all were now, but categories along the line of ....funniest, best language learning, best cultural lesson, most controversial or topical, an open category for a lesson worthy of a nomination for a category not thought of...and then let the poddies make their nominations. Certainly not perfect but at least you will get what some consider good 'uns and why...

"at risk of burning any goodwill I've tried to earn back"
....I don't know what you're talking about. There's never been any loss of goodwill as far as I could see. It was great to have your contribution in this discussion and I really enjoyed our little debate. It'd be boring if we all interpreted the dialogue in the same way...it wouldn't have lended to such a fun debate.
"'Seven Minutes of Terror,'"
...I haven't been following the mars landing, so I had to look it up. For those like me who haven't been following, this refers to the 7minutes after the landing on Mars that there is no communication...due to the time it takes for the signal from Mars to get back to earth...I haven't explained that very well, so it's all explained here:

"meet me in the supply closet in 10"
..ok, I'm a bit daft but I'm not 100% certain on this one. I would normally take such an invitation to be suggesting a little, ahem, amorous rendezvous, indicating you fancy the guy, and the "terror" kinda indicating it's going to be pretty wild stuff, but I'm not sure if that pic is indicating he's got a booger hanging out..or if that's just background stuff, and also not sure if you would find such a mohawk guy attractive or not....so I think it is my former interpretation, but I don't know much about this guy and whether you do literally want to give him some violent terror [seems unlikely though] [RJ's going to love my confusion here, hehe]
