Both of them are exchanging thoughts and making meaningful conversations, though 交流 is emphasizing the exchange of opinion between both parties or individuals, whereas 沟通 usually involves a sense of persuading, convincing, or lobbying.
For example,
我认为设计团队必须与其他机构交流，才能了解当前的流行趋势。
你去和她沟通一下，请她在待会儿的提问时间别问这么多问题。

I think a good way of introducing yourself instead of saying you're a physicist is 我是做物理研究的 wǒ shì zuò wùlǐ yánjiù de, which literally means I conduct physics studies and research.
Also, the translation "physicist" on your business card is the title of what you do, so I think there's nothing you need to worry about. Thanks for the response.
