hmmm yes that is probably it...obviously I didn't even consider the diao to have a fourth tone because my mind is unfortunately permanentely in the gutter...thanks for clarifynig that!

So how is this expression used? Is it common maren hua? Ie someone is rude to you and you want to insult them but not so severely that you bring up their mother, you just throw out a gaosidiao?

What does chi ni dou fu mean exactly?  Just simply to act sleazy?  Are there any examples?  I listened to this lesson while walking down the street today and I swear this sentence was not touched upon, but maybe I just missed it...

May I ask what resources you use to find such examples online (so I can do it myself and not ask on here) ?

I normally just use my Japanese made electronic dictionary that has English-Chinese-Japanese languages in any possible combination one could want, yet I re-listened to this lesson one my way down to Shenzhen today and I noticed at the end of the dialogue he says to his wife he will take her to the bathhouse so she can 体验 it. But I was thinking would 体会 work as well? and what is the difference between these two words???

But if I could find examples online I won't have to ask on Chinesepod.com! So when you guys have a second please let me know what tools you use for online dictionaries and example sentences.

PS To give an example of how I am a posterboy for Chinesepod.com, I was at a Sichuan restaurant in Shenzhen eating my favorite dish, Laziji. My mouth was on fire so I thought screw it Im going to have a beer even though it is daytime. So I screamed out (all NE China style...yes I know it is a little rude but it is so much fun to yell at people in chinese and cause a scene and heck the NE Chinese people do it so I am just copying them) FUWUYUAN KUAI NA PING PIJIU...kuaidian! zuiba tengsi le

And a few min later this Malaysian girl came over and told me she she spoke chinese but wanted to know where I learned so she could find a school for her sister. I told her: Chinesepod.com

Well it has been cool to see all the responses, and clearly from looking at those who have contributed to the discussion, nobody agrees with me.

But please keep in mind that in the eyes of the Chinese themselves, Chinese spoken with a northeastern accent, specifically Haerbin, is considered to be the best, most standard mandarin. I think that if you were to perhaps to try asking some Chinese people, specifically highly educated, professional Chinese, they would mostly agree with this.

Did anyone actually try listening to any western movies professionally dubbed into Chinese over the weekend? Like I said, try doing that and you will see that they are devoid of any southern style accents. Now why would that be if southern style chinese was considered to be standard?

Basically my point about the "ghetto punk from the hood" or the "southern hick" speaking English, is that there are broad styles of English in America, and yet these two styles sound nothing like standard American English spoken by popular newscasters or talk show hosts. So if a non-native English speaker was studying American English, they would want to be aware of different accents, but I personally feel it would hardly be advisable for them to listen to only dialogues with such accents, and not listen to any English which is considered to be more standard and widespread.

If you want to keep arguing with me go for it, but at the end of the day the world's focus is more and more moving towards China, not Singapore or Taiwan. So personally I want to focus my efforts on emulating a NE accent. With the government's strong effort to make putonghua more and more widespread and unify the Chinese language, and with national professional productions for the most part ALL using NE style mandarin, I choose to learn NE style standard mandarin.

Wellwhy the distinct lack of standard mandarin ala the way it is spoken in the north? why has there never been a speaker from beijing or haerbin? most of the places you mention are notorious for bad mandarin...if you want diversity clearly you would go to where it is considered to be most standard in the entire chinese speaking universe...

calkins, I am just writing and not checking for errors. and you are missing the point entirely. It isnt so much speaking like a newscaster but rather speaking with a pleasant accent. you do realize most people in southern china will even tell you their mandarin is not very good...dont you? take people from hunan, their speech is so bad I can't stand talking to them. it is garbled. the same way I would talk to someone from the hood in America for my sheer amusement and then viciously mock them behind their back is how I would entertain someone from hunan who hasnt learned to speak good mandarin. (ok I am joking, but perhaps you get the point). In guangzhou most people will tell you their mandarin is not good. What is boils down to is you are showing your ignorance, but that is cool, I hope I am opening up your eyes. there are entire portions of the country that speak good mandarin, like in heilongjiang, but none of those speakers seem to be in cpod. go out and ask chinese people where the most standard mandarin comes from and they will all tell you Northeast specifically heilongjiang. I am not making this up.

google chinesepod bad mandarin or somethign like that and you see I am not the only one.
