June 16, 2007 at 2:40 PMNO TAX CODE LANGUAGE ON CPOD PLS - I'm listening to the podcast now. My first reaction was why use such a big technical word..."reduplication," I think I've probably never used it in a conversation. I know it's technically correct and has the most specificity, but aren't most students either too intimidated or too enamored with grammar. If I was King Arthur, I'd say change the pedagogy of Cpod to -- Principle 1: First use common English to describe the language. Principle 2: Use grammar terms as a last resort. Principle 3: I'm learning Chinese, not English. (by the way I hate "modal" particle too. Can't we just say it's a moooood particle? ) "Why are verbs repeated twice in Chinese?*" "Why are some words said twice in Chinese*" *The formal linguistic term for this phenomena is called reduplication. ...by the way, I don't think it's only verbs, 玲玲，宝宝， 清清

June 14, 2007 at 4:14 PMDONG! - Okay, if I'm anything, sometimes I am a very stubborn soul. A while back in this post said, I asked Cpod about the use or existence of 'dong ka fei', "cold/ice coffee". Amber said, "Lantian, There is no "冬咖啡" (dōng kāfēi) in Mandarin. Only: 冰咖啡 (bīng kāfēi) 热咖啡 (rè kāfēi) " You're wrong!!! The other day I again ordered some ice coffee and listening VERY carefully I was positive she replied back to me 'dong ka fei' after I asked for 'bing kafei'. So later I asked another Chinese friend and she said, yah it's common here. But then I said, ....well I have oootherrrr sources that say no can do. Then she back-tracked a little and said maybe one is never supposed to write it that way, but in spoken lingo it's okay. We also agreed then that up north maybe nobody would ever say 'dong kafei'. But I'm still "in China" and it was "putonghua"... I want re-confirmation. Yah know, like how the NYT has to print a retraction if they spell a name wrong. Heh. 请你在问问几个人，能不能说 “dong" 咖啡。 Is it that the hanzi is not 冬? :D

June 7, 2007 at 6:15 AMHANZI - I still don't get the concept of why the intermediate photo hanzi don't have pinyin somewhere on it. Am I supposed to intuit the sounds from a non-phonetic writing system? Today's I could guess the 'fei' as that phonetic holds for that character. Not sure if 'cheng' or 'jian' or 'lian' goes with the first one. As an intermediate am I supposed to LIKE using the dictionary? As an 'intermediate' am somehow supposed to now be able to guess the tones in any new hanzi that I see? I guess after I listen to the podcast I'll guess the character and know the tones, but is that the reason, you want me to guess? I HAVE to listen first? 今，我没耐心! :）
