The main difference between the two patterns is that 着can be used more flexibly with different parts of speech while 一边一边 must have two verbs, e.g. you can say 忙着工作 but cannot say 一边忙一边工作。If you have two verbs, the meanings are fairly similar, e.g. 哭着说 kūzheshuō and 一边哭一边说 yībiàn kū yībiàn shuō. However, the former emphasizes the situation in which the person was crying while the latter emphasizes the fact that the two actions are being performed at the same time. English translations might read as such: "speaking while crying" vs. "speaking and crying at the same time"; essentially the same sentences but the emphases are slightly different. Additionally, 着 mainly describes a state. 哭着说 is "speaking while crying". The crying and sadness is a state the person is in much as 忙 in the example 忙着工作 is a state.

Thanks for the support! I worked with Jason for a few weeks before he departed and the shoes to fill are quite large indeed. Thankfully I have an all-star team here at ChinesePod to help me out so hopefully the transition will be relatively smooth!

July 7, 2011 at 8:32 AMA valid point, sclim, as soaking brings to mind a longer process with the intent to make the food in question absorb the water. We also certainly wouldn't want to be responsible for anyone spoiling their 冷面 due to a small (but important) distinction like that. :) We'll get right on it!
