September 26, 2014 at 6:41 AMI think this usage is commonly used in South, but it doesn't belong to dialect differences. Otherwise, it probably not easy to be found in a standard dictionary like I mentioned.
I also has great interest on these interesting differences. Big fan of researching language variety. We will see if we can find more words or usages for a such Qing Wen in the future. Thank you for your great question.

I've asked some of my Chinese friends about their language sense of '把东西藏藏好' and '老师说的话要听听'. The result is people from North has never use or hear this pattern, but on the contrary people from South all think this is very natural. It's really an interesting phenomenon.

A good question. 象, 像 and 相 have the same pronunciation and similar original meaning. They always make people confused even for a Chinese. According to different writing customs, 像 and 相 are sometimes mix together, like 照相 and 照像, it's hard to say which one is not correct. But 照相 is more used as a meaning of 'take photo' in modern Chinese.
像/xiang4 could be a noun or verb, is more referring to the meaning of 'symbolization', 'to imitate' or 'to be similar as', like 头像, 塑像, 图像。
相/xiang4 is a noun. It's more referring to the meaning of 'natural appearance', 'objective image or impression' , like 相片，真相，相貌。
My suggestion is try to remember these characters in words and don't be afraid to use them.

"...这些是动作尚未发生。动词重叠主要的作用是缓和语气，是委婉的表达主观意愿的一种方式。说话人用这种重叠形式来表示自己请求，命令，愿望，表示事情不是很费时，费力似乎是不难做到的从而使对方容易接受。"
