February 9, 2017 at 2:17 AMInteresting that you should associate 'Face' with respect. While not inaccurate, it does however deflect somewhat that 'face' has more to do with avoiding humiliation, and in many instances kowtowing to a person of authority.

November 7, 2015 at 1:45 AMFirst things first implies an action that must be taken before other actions can be undertaken. Or in order to achieve further goals then something must first be undertaken. I wouldn't think one at a time is accurate.
Rather one step at a time, but in no pre-determined order apart from the first, would be closer 一步一步的， so as to avoid the consequences of 拔苗助長 : Jumping the gun, over enthusiastic. .

October 28, 2015 at 11:49 AMYeah I think there is, though others may disagree. Some close interpretations for irony in Chinese is 奇怪 strange, 奇特 peculiar, or 離奇 bizarre, odd. 吊詭 paradoxical and 悖論 paradox are also close to the mark.
諷刺 and 反話 both mean sarcasm. but the latter is often described as irony in Chinese dictionaries.
她說的是反話 she's being sarcastic.
有讽刺的味道 a hint or touch or irony, ironic.
這情況有點諷刺的味道 This situation has a touch of irony about it. This situation is a little ironic.
Irony is associated in English with amusement as well as in Chinese. However, irony in English is not always associated with humour.
That's my take on it. Would be good to hear other people's views.
