ChinesePod on NBC Nightly News

We've been waiting for several weeks for it to air. Now NBC Nightly News with Brian Lehrer say they will broadcast a report on ChinesePod on Tuesday, Oct 16th. It's part of a week long series of reports on China.
We understand that ChinesePod, although highly significant in a cosmic sense, may not be as newsworthy as, say, a global crisis. (This is not false modesty, believe me.) Let's hope the global community behaves itself around that time, lest we get pushed off the news agenda.

Wow, great exposure for CPod. More people to check out the great work of Jenny Shoe!

Food just fits into two categories???? what about 'Olive garden' where they continually try to kill me with the world's biggest soup'n'salad...and then i have to take the rest of the 'meal' home in a box and repeatedly have to eat it over the next 5 days?

I'm a little disappointed with NBC, it was so short, and no john.
But all media exposure is good exposure methinks.
Now i would like to see Ken, Jenny and john on BBC Breakfast.

That's right, Lantian....food only fits into one of two categories here. It's either Chinese or it's Mexican. :P

Just a few seconds of Ken Carroll and Jenny "Shu" on NBC. They need to work on their tones and more.

Hi guys,
Thanks for posting up the link and the kind words. We can't seem to get it streaming here in Shanghai. It might be blocked but hopefully we can find a way around it soon.

I saw Ken and Jenny briefly on the news! There are a few seconds of Ken answering a question.

Here's tonight's China report on NBC Nightly with Brian Williams. I recommend that Chinese ladies watch it. It's quite interesting. It doesn't have CPod, that's tomorrow according to Ken (see above.)

Sparechage, that turtle avatar is just so cool!
I was also thinking the same thing. I hope that CPod has planned for the increase in business sure to come. It's better over staffing than understaffing at this juncture.

So are you guys anticipating a boost in website traffic after the broadcast?

October 16, 2007 at 01:21 PMLook at this on the same page, in the lower left hand corner. iPods as teaching tools :) They mention their use to teach English, among other subjects, in New Jersey. There's a pretty shocking comment by the journalist in there, at about 2 minutes, when she says there is no scientific way to evaluate the effectiveness of this new approach. The truth is there's a lot of research going into applying this kind of technology for education and also for evaluating its impact. This is a topic that's just heating up. There will be a lot of spinoffs in this field from economic productivity research. Some of you may be aware of the Solow paradox, named after Robert Solow who once observed that we see computers everywhere, except in the productivity statistics. That's true, in the sense that IT investment is hard to evaluate because it often results in organizational transformation which is hard to measure, but IT investment does show up in total factor productivity, which is that change in productivity which is not attributable to any single factor. The thing to keep in mind is how new all of this is, and how evaluation systems are just adapting. Once they catch up, we will really see things take off, because the effects of IT will be better understood. There's a historical precedent in the introduction of electricity on factory floors to replace steam energy. For quite some time factories were designed more or less like they had been with steam technology, because industrial engineers took some time to wrap their heads around the fact that you cand send electrical current through a cable, which is thinner than a pipe, which makes factory designs more flexible, which in turn makes greater productivity gains possible.

Ken,
Any update on whether the report is going ahead tonight or tomorrow night?

The guy who did the report is Mark Mullen. He's a well known broadcaster who now lives in Beijing as NBC's correspondent there. I think he knows some Chinese.

From what I've jsut heard the report could be delayed for a day, but will go ahead. Not sure, but as long as it runs I'm happy.

I think NBC should be creating it's own category just for us. They're apparently doing an entire week of China-related news though, so the story may not fall cleanly into their other news categories.

Uh, I do believe it's Brian Williams. (Sure hope he or his staff isn't learning Mandarin yet, or they might pull the segment) ((kidding))

October 08, 2007 at 07:16 PMCool, thanks Christian. Wow... I would feel so exposed working in there. I much prefer my little corner in the office with my bank of monitors so no one can see what I'm doing. :) Of course, in their case, they're actually supposed to be surfing chinesepod.com all day.

October 08, 2007 at 04:54 PMActually, Sparechange, there's a tour of the factory on YouTube, but I think it's a bit dated. Maybe it's time for the occupants of 751 Huangpi Nan Rd to make a new one? (cough! cough!)

Well, maybe I'll bribe one of my friends with a DVR as a back-up.
So are you guys actually located in an old factory or something? I keep getting this image of computers randomly scattered amongst a bunch of old machinery with cables laying everywhere...and a bunch of cots on the floor where you guys sleep. Kind of like the ship from the first Matrix movie.

I hope I get to see it... I'm hoping that they'll use at least 3 seconds of the part where they interviewed me. (Although, I suppose it's fair to say that the parts with Ken and Jenny will be more interesting...)

Haha... I'm not too sure about the whole NBC nightly news - Youtube thing but hopefully NBC will put the video up on their site for us to link to it (fingers crossed!). It was pretty cool to have met all the NBC Nightly crew team. It sure brought life to our quiet little factory corner of Huang Pi Nan Lu. :-)

I'm sure there will, er, somehow be a Youtube link for the recording. Here's the link to the NBC site also: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/ They may host it, too.

That's awesome! Just don't let the fame go to your head... Ditto on the YouTube idea; I don't have TV in my apartment (I know, I know... I just got used to living without it after a while. And I'd rather spend my money on Chinese lessons).
