P.s. I knew Johnny Depp from the movie加勒比海盗Pirates of Caribbean. He is really hot。^_^ I knew Kate Winslet from the movie 泰坦尼克Titanic, she is very beautiful.

Actually the world's richest self-made woman is Chinese! 她叫张茵。(Her name is Zhang Yin).
While Oprah has her spotlight, 张茵 solved a problem of empty ocean containers traveling from America to China. She is a manufacturing genius! Her company Nine Dragons Paper actually helps green the planet by recycling and promoting green & sustainable business growth. Good for her!

Just a quick comment before I go out..
I often wondered why Chinese broadcasts would have Chinese characters as subtitles. I mean.. if they are speaking Chinese.. why would they need subtitles.. in.. Chinese..
Now I realise why.. it's because the 汉字 are universal to all Chinese language speakers but the dialect that is being spoken is not. So someone who speaks Cantonese may not be able to understand as well when they are speaking Mandarin on the TV show. So they put the 汉字 at the bottom so that they can understand.

oh wei1xiao4,
Don't worry, it is okay, just take it easy. I believe that your chinese will be good as well as 沙博理and李老one day since you are living in China. You have the better chance and environment to know about Chinese culture and learn Chinese than some other poddies.^_^
Feel free to ask me if you have some questions about Chinese. ^_^

rjberki,
The first one whose name is沙博理, he is 93years old. He is the first person who translated《水浒传》into English. I remembered that you said you had read Outlaws of the Marsh before. I think the version you had read was translated by him.
I am glad you guys like them. It is all chinese speaking in those shows but I think you can understand some or may be more. A lot of words and expressions that Chinesepod had lessons about them. You guys can check out your chinese. ^_^ azerdocmom, I am glad that you are inspired. And dawnoctopus, hope you can enjoy them.

I am going to watch these shows when I get home from work tonight, thank you!
Regarding Oprah-- I have never seen her show, because I am at work when it's on, but I *love* her book club! I have liked every book that Oprah has suggested, there is even one that takes place in China, called "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck.

Thank you guys.
There is a very famous show called 鲁豫有约in China. I like this show very much because there are many interesting stories that you never know before. The host whose name is陈鲁豫,she is very famous here and she is a talented lady. Her english is very very good! I am reading a book wrote by her recently. She mentioned Oprah in her book so that is why I know there is such a talk show host in the US.
oh, speaking of 鲁豫有约, I got two wonderful shows to show you. They are about two Americans who have lived in China for more than 40years and had memorable life experiences in China. One is in his 80s and the other is in his 90s. Both of them speak very good Chinese!

It's funny b/c I just asked my Chinese roomate yesterday if she had heard of Oprah and she said no. (=
She is so well-known in the US, I think we take for granted that everyone in the world has heard of her.
Recently she has been on the news b/c she seems to be starting her own New-age religion. They say since she is so popular she has an almost cult-like following of millions of people.

Casie, besides all the celebrities, Oprah is well known for her causes that she gives attention to on her show, especially things that deal with women and children. She just opened a girl's school in Africa. She also has a book club which has encouraged people to read more. The books she has chosen over the years have become immediate best sellers. She is backing Barack Obama in the US Presidential race and has made some appearances with him. She's a pretty amazing women who has overcome many obstacles to get to where she is today.

I personally don't watch Oprah (for the simple reason that I'm a guy. hehe), but whenever there's an interesting guest on (eg Barack Obama, etc), I stay tuned.
A really interesting bit on Oprah is that she gives away all sorts of gifts to her live audience. She has this thing called "Oprah's Favorite Stuff" where she gives away everything she likes to each audience member. FREE STUFF, my goodness. :P
She even gave each audience member a car before.

Hi casie. I have to admit, I really like watching "Oprah". Many (mainly the more sophisticated) Americans like to criticize her for her homespun, "low-brow" (= "down-to-earth"; 可是 "low-brow" 这个英文词含有一点贬义。。。) style. However, I don't get the impression that Oprah over-simplifies things for her viewers.
Oprah Winfrey is known for promoting reading. Some of her shows are devoted to something called "Oprah's Book Club", where she -- and quite often the author -- will discuss a particular book. Not necessarily a new title; sometimes it is a title that is 20+ years old, but still readily obtainable. In terms of book sales, books selected by her tend to do very well. In this respect, she is very influential.

Yes, her audience and fans are overwhelmingly women. She is pretty influential in American culture and her show is very popular.
Her shows vary by topic. Sometimes she has celebrity interviews (most of the biggest Western celebrities appear on her show) and other shows focus on women and family issues. She has a very popular "My Favorite Things" show where she mentions her favorite things (food, clothes etc.) - any of these items mentioned on that show become very popular.
She is also very rich, a multi-billionaire who does give a lot money to charity. I believe she is the richest self-made woman in the world.
I'm embarrassed I know all of this considering I don't even like her! But I agree with you about Kate Winslet - 很漂亮!

I can tell you that it's filmed in Chicago. Actually, my last job in the corporate world was a few blocks from her studio (Harpo Studios). I'd walk by it just about everyday. Unfortunately, I never saw the big O or went to a show. Do they let men into her show? ;)

May 04, 2008 at 02:19 AMWoolap,
My source was the annual Forbes list that came out in March which had Oprah worth $2.5 billion which tied her for the 462nd richest person in the world. I looked up Zhang Yin (Cheung Yan) and she was worth $1.9 billion in the same list (making her the 652nd richest person). It looks like Zhang Yin's net worth dropped from last year when she was worth $3.4 billion clearly beating Oprah then. In either case, they're both extremely rich!
