May 25, 2019 at 1:01 PMI came across a really interesting book last year, it is a history of the Chinese typewriter. Before computers came along to make life easier for everyone typewriting had evolved to such an extent that there were even mechanical input systems that let you type pinyin and offered a choice of characters the same way that modern IME's work. Here is a link to this very interesting book: https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/chinese-typewriter. The author is planning a sequel which will take the story on through the history of computerized IME's up to the present day.
