June 29, 2007 at 5:36 PMUm...I guess I already printed out ... all...29 pages...BUT IT'S A VERY INTERESTING DIALOGUE. I'm glad to see more lessons with real life language on display. After all, If you only use a texbook to learn how to speak you'll always speak like a textbook. Hmmm I'll have to coin that phrase right along side this one, if a Maple Tree falls in the middle of a Bamboo forest does it still give Maple Syrup? ...something to ponder over.

June 28, 2007 at 6:58 PMLaodai, Maybe it would be a good idea to have an adults only section at least then we don't mix lessons on how to swear in with General Audiences only lessons. Lessons on how to swear would probably get Chinese Pod alot more hits since the first thing people want to know is how to swear in a foreign language. If it were under an ADULTS ONLY section with a disclaimer on the opening page, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I wonder if anyone else would have a problem with it? Does it fit into the Chinese Pod business model?

June 27, 2007 at 5:03 PMAmber, Thanks Amber, I didn't know it is a 多音词, I've always thought it was pronounced only one way, as "Zhuo Mo", (by the way how do you type diacritical marks above the words using a standard keyboard?). Even my wife confirmed that it's ONLY pronouced as Zhuo Mo, but that's not to say she's right, after all many many Chinese people are very unclear about this especially when it comes to 卷舌头的声音，and being that she is from 沈阳 , even though she's a native Mandarin speaker, her dialect is different from the standard, EG she pronounces 是，as "Si" etc. Another one of those I've noticed is commonly pronounced differently by the average Chinese person, than the standard Mandarin way we learn is 暖和， Most Chinese people pronounce this word as "Nuan3 He2", but the way I originally learned it is, "Nuan3 Huo", my Private Tutor was ADAMANT I needed to pronounce it "Nuan3 Huo" to be better than the average Chinese person, but since so many people say "Nuan3 He2" now I say it that way too. I guess sometimes it's good not to be too rigid, it's okay to 随波逐流. Right?

June 27, 2007 at 7:13 AMTriplelatte I don't know if it's a regional difference or not. I assumed it might be, because all the Chinese people pehind this site are 南方人, and the people I asked about the usage of 随便 are all 北方人 so I naturally assumed there is some correlation there.

June 27, 2007 at 6:33 AMHi Amber, Re: pronunciation of 琢磨 Are you sure you didn't mean it's acceptable in Southern China to pronounce it Zuo2 Mo? The standard pronunciation according to the Chinese Dictionary is Zhuo2 Mo, but people from Southern China don't usualy roll their tongue so the group of initial Ch, Zh, Sh sounds are pronounced like Ci, Zi, Si, hence Southern Chinese people would pronounce: 琢磨 as Zuo Mo

Kitty: print out the lesson on fast speed, it won't waste ink and paper is so inexpensive especially buying it in the large boxes, I mean each box with enough paper to last years is only a few bucks. Trust me, the larger font is better, why ruin our eyes while we're young with print so small it will cause blindness by age 35? Oh Clarence: They do have a page here on Chinesepod that explains the difference between the lesson plans. Maybe try reading up a bit and remember, in the more ADVANCED LESSONS the lesson structure is tailored to ADVANCED (or in this case Upper Intermediate) students which given the title UPPER INTERMEDIATE would imply that the people using these lessons would already have a great command of the Chinese language and woudn't need or even appreciate having a lot of English thrown in to the lesson to occupy the few precious minutes of concentrated Chinese learning in each podcast. If you want to know more advanced students attitude toward this subject read up on the Chinesepod forum on John's Sinosplice.com website. You'll see even the smallest amount of English thrown into these podcasts was met with much resistance. Also These lessons are structured with MORE THAN JUST A LITTLE BIT OF THOUGHT BEHIND THEM! Please give Ken, Jenny, John et al enough credit that they didn't fall off the Tortilla truck yesterday.
