July 11, 2007 at 6:29 AMYeah Street Fighter 2, gotta love those kind of references in your Chinese lessons to just add to the already overflowing goodness of Chinese Pod. Want to know the Chinese way to say Street Fighter? 街头霸王

July 11, 2007 at 5:27 AMChangye, Upon re-reading my post you're absolutely right, I could have kept my personal opinions about a culture out of it, and just kept the post on the subject of what Chinese Pod is supposed to be, which is a language learning forum. Sometimes I'm too opinionated. ご免なさい、

July 11, 2007 at 3:37 AM结尾的时候我太喜欢警察来抓那个贩毒者大省的叫,“轻点儿,轻点儿!”(nice touch!) 我觉得这种课文很有劲儿的,而且感觉很想看电视似的! 我希望在未来, Chinesepod 可以在给我们制造这种录音节目质量很高的课文!比看Infernal Affairs 有意思! 真的太好了! By the way through the whole lesson, and the expansion vocabulary, I didn't see the word for drug dealer, the word I used, 贩毒者 is that correct?

July 11, 2007 at 3:03 AMI'm also glad to have a few more risque' topics on Chinese Pod. I don't mind these lessons talking about things like 毒品,or 避孕套,because this is real life. I also really like the sound effects used in the lesson to create a realistic mood, and the acting is JUST GETTING SO GOOD (as an actor I can appreciate things like this), it also really helps to increase our ability to learn when things feel real, it increases the emotional connection to the material.

July 11, 2007 at 2:56 AMchangye, 男子汉不讲前妻的坏话、 女强人不挑前夫的毛病 这句话编得很聪明地呀! 那, 这句话是你直接为我编写的还是比较笼统地为了所有跟我一样种类人编写的?

July 10, 2007 at 4:18 AMGlyph, Once again I agree. Changye, While every society has a seething underbelly, one has to examine, the pros and cons and make a decision. Right now from the standpoint of a language learner and which society I feel is worth me investing my time and energy into, It would have to be in China. That doesn't have anything to do with how I feel about the people in general. While yes I feel most Japanese people are hard to read and difficult to build common ground with, really that doesn't mean that ALL Japanese people act a certain way. That also doesn't mean I don't have Japanese friends. It also doesn't mean there isn't a HEAPIN' HELPIN' of Chinese people that put on a front (as we all do from time to time) It just means from my personal feelings, experience and assesment of the two countries, I feel the greater promise right now lies in China. Changye, just take my comments with a healthy grain of salt, here is another appropriate 成語 I think pretty well sums up what I'm trying to say, 見仁見智。

July 9, 2007 at 2:51 AMglyph I second that motion! For a while the Japanese culture interested me, but I like you was attracted at first because of their technology and art (Manga, Video Games, Electronics, Cars etc.), but modern Japanese culture is not all that interesting. Sometimes it's nothing but a confusing connundrum of social rules and obligations, and so many Japanese are so hard to read! On the outside they are smiling and polite but on the inside, what do they really think? Additionally, I don't like alot of their social problems, which a big one is this situation of older, wealthy married Japanese men having relations with underage girls, and we're talking 13, 14, 15 year old girls! The wife knows what's going on but no one says a word, the man just feels it's his right because he's the head of the family and the breadwinner! 哎呀,我受不了! I think the biggest problem right now is that the Japanese are resting on their laurels, they've become complacent since for so many years they were considered to be so special, and as you say their manufacturing genius (which as you said was TRUE GENIUS) set them so high on the world stage. I see in a lot of ways they are becoming like the Roman empire, on the outside it's rotting. If fact there is a perfect 成語,to sum up Japan's current situation. 金玉其外, 敗絮其中!
