I have a question: with english, unless they're musically minded, most people couldn't tell a violin from a viola, a flute from a piccolo etc etc. I'm kind of assuming the same thing applies in china? A lot of these instruments look quite similar, is it the case that the average man on the street wouldn't know the difference between a 古筝 and a 古琴? Because I have to be honest, I'm not scrambling to add the instrument names to my vocab list at the moment :-)

Also, why is the conductor in the picture above carrying a handbag? Or is it a traditional chinese handbag? :)

Could you not then tune it by ear?

You could, but it's hard to turn the pegs with your ears.
