February 23, 2008 at 12:25 PM我的在派出所的经历没有什么大不了的,只是浪费很多时间. I've had to go to the 派出所 4 times in the last 6 months. Once to renew my registration (must be done every 6 months), once when I got my new passport, once to transfer my visa to my new passport, once again to renew my visa. I now have to go again to tell the local residence-oriented 派出所 about my new visa, as their systems are somehow not connected to the main 公安局 office that issues visas. 真的是官僚作风呀!!

February 23, 2008 at 11:18 AM呵呵， 好像我们英语老师都跟学生讨论过这个话题。 So we now know what sadism is (虐待狂), but is there a term for S&M as a general concept and, um, activity? Also, I definitely second the notion of more story lessons, sci-fi or otherwise. 寂州 was fun, and I'd really enjoy a story where even more crazy things happened.

January 5, 2008 at 5:43 AMThis is very old, but I feel like commenting anyway :) I guess my experience as a (half) Chinese-blooded American is different than most of the other 华裔 here. I was raised by my mix-blooded FIlipino-Spanish mother in America, and had absolutely no Chinese culture or language growing up, despite my appearance being virtually 100% Chinese. Living in China, no one accepts the fact that I am 100% American (well, maybe a little FIlipino as well), and don't feel Chinese at all. To pretend that I am Chinese feels as odd to me as pretending to be French (I studied and lived in France for a while). Sure, I have gained more understanding of Chinese language and culture, but it never feels like it's mine; I am and always will feel like a guest here. But Chinese people I've met are so hung up on blood, they always view me as a Chinese person living in America, and that thus I should have a more intimate connection with China, its culture, its people, and its language than folks with no Chinese blood running through their veins. I simply don't, and the fact that most people do not believe it really frustrates me. Of course, it's most annoying when applying for English-teaching jobs here, where sometimes people will hire white Frenchmen with awful accents over an American with a Chinese face. The ignorance regarding this issue here is simply astounding.

November 4, 2007 at 1:35 PMI don't think Americans can get that 6-month F-visa in Hong Kong. Brits and Euros can, provided they proclaim themselves self-employed businessmen, or something of the sort. I have a few friends who are riding such visas.

February 24, 2008 at 4:29 PMHey Changye (or anyone else who knows), would you mind explaining this sentence to me? "肯德基兼职时薪仅有五块钱引起了争议， 可见上海等大城市的生活水平还是很高。" What does the 兼职 in this sentence mean? My dictionary says it means having two concurrent jobs, but I can't really make sense of the sentence. My rough translation is: "KFC's hourly wage for two concurrent jobs being only 5 RMB/hour attracts a lot of controversy, as it is quite evident that cities like Shanghai all have a very high standard of living." The "two concurrent jobs" translation for 兼职 must be wrong, no? By the way, changye, I really appreciate your comments, both for their content and the fact that they always provide nice complicated Chinese to analyze.
