Yes, the sports meet/athletes song is one I've heard MANY times, especially when my bedroom window was right next to a middle school in 2005.

At Nankai University here in Tianjin, where I'm studying now, we had a sports meet for the whole Chinese studies department, over 200 students.  When we got to the track, we were to group by class.  I jokeningly said, next thing they will do is have us walk around the track slowly to the athlete song.... then the next thing I knew, that song came on the speakers, and we had to walk painfully slow around the track...even slower than the parade of nations at the Olympics.  I WAS ONLY KIDDING!  WE DON'T NEED TO PARADE AROUND THE TRACK TO THIS SONG!  Oh well, we did, and so yeah, lots of memories of that song.

Anyway, I've been going to Beijing almost every weekend since the Olympics started (or more so since it ended, lot easier, and the bullet train less crowded).  I had been to WangFuJing street (王府井) many times, as it was one of the first places I set foot in China in 2002, but when I went there in September with a Chinese friend, I never thought I would be eating larva, sea horses, scorpions, etc.  Really never even noticed them in the food street next to the big screen TV across from McDonalds.  Crazy, but I was willing to eat them, as long as my friend was willing to eat them, and she was.

Come and 尝尝!!

Jenny, you're making me hungry! (as if this lesson didn't already... 今天没有吃午饭)

So, this Beijing accent, who did it?  Where did the sound bites come from?  Someone from Beijing work there?

这节课真不做。虽然我住在中国五年多了,学习高级汉语,我没学过没说过“收走一下”这个词语。很有帮助。

I would have thought, going by Chinese interest in numbers, that lesson 999 should actually be the one celebrated... as it is 久久久 forever, and ever and ever... ha ha.  Let's hope so!

Hey, want to say congratulations to ChinesePod, Jenny, John, Ken, Amber and the rest for 1000 lessons.  Been waiting for this day to roll around, but then am a little late to get on and say something (as it has been usual these days).  恭喜恭喜!!  Does this mean you can now 关门 and all go home?  Ha ha... wishing you another 1000 more lessons to come (and does just 1000 lessons themselves seem a lot??!!)

I listened to this from a 1RMB/hour Internet "cafe" here in China... yes they do exist, but usually around campuses like I am now.

Interesting to note about the Engnese words given, one was 买单 mǎidān is now commonly written/thought that way, but as I learned here from a teacher at 南开大学 in 天津, and from the textbook as well, this actually was originally a word that came from Cantonese, which is 埋单, which means to "bury" the "bill".  This is máidān in Mandarin (note actually 2nd tone for mai, not 3rd).  This was adopted into Mandarin, but of course then everyone just started to say 买 instead of 埋.  Everyone I ask about this think they are saying 买 but then will go "ah ha!" when I tell them it comes from that Cantonese word.

So, in addition to us having Engnese words (I like Zhonglish better actually), there is "Cantarin" words too. ;)

Wow, ChinesePod never fails to impress me.  Great idea with the videos.  What else has ChinesePod done lately that uses video?  I've been a little MIA the last 4-5 months.  Any new videos of the staff, etc.?

Hey, want to also come out of the woodwork and wish ChinesePod a happy 3 year birthday.  I still remember getting to know ChinesePod 2 years ago, realizing how different and personal it was compared to all the other ways I learn Chinese.  As a present, I'll start being around more, ha ha.  Actually as this new semester starts here in Tianjin at Nankai University, I was planning to return to ChinesePod... I still have MP3s that I listen to on my cell phone (a little old though) but realized that I really miss being a part of this wonderful community.  Think it is about time I get used to this new interface that has been here for months (one of the reasons I didn't manage to stick around once they went ot this version)
