August 10, 2016 at 12:17 PMInteresting translation of " 你手机泡过水 。 。 。吗？： “Did you soak your phone in water?" Might it be better to translate as "did your phone get immersed in water?" Or maybe "did your phone fall into water" although that's a less literal translation. Could you say "手机掉进水里了吗？or " 手机掉入水里了吗”？ I guess my problem with "did you soak . . . " is it sounds intentional. Like I soaked my phone with my dishes overnight to get it clean, or I soaked my phone in the foot bath.

July 31, 2016 at 1:46 AMLooks like it is just a mistake in the pinyin transcript. It should have been dádēng. 打灯 meaning to indicate (intent to turn) or signal a turn, as written in the Chinese part of the transcript.

Now, would anyone like to discuss the Chinese content? How about transitive and intransitive verbs in Chinese, and related English verbs with which they might be confused. Maybe a future Qing Wen topic?

August 11, 2016 at 2:24 AMI think its pretty normal for Chinese to use some easily associated characters to disambiguate the characters for their names. I suppose English speakers don't commonly spell their names for people unless asked. Of course it looks funny in translation, but I'm guessing that like me you would not be familiar with the cited quote.
"Bond. James Bond. B as in Bravo, O as in . . . ."
