Thanks, this is neat. I've already forwarded the link to at least one person. Expect it to "go viral" ;)

Yes, I know the Skritter programmers have made several attempts to contact Chinese Pod to try to restore the service, but so far did not get any response. It happened when the API was updated. Skritter really helps CPod subscribers get the most out of Chinese Pod. I hope that the interruption of service was just an unintended consequence. Please bring back CPod vocabulary lists on Skritter!

Earlier I said that "trillion" is 兆 zhào, but 万亿 wànyì is commonly used.

mrzhou,

well, extending your soundalike mnemonic, maybe this will help you to remember that 10,000 is ONE unit of something (one "wàn"), and not ten of something as it is in English. I think "getting" wàn is a key part of the lesson, because the the following three higher powers of ten (十万,百万,千万) don't line up neatly with English, so one has to learn to think in terms of 万。

you are welcome

trillion has its own word and character, : 兆 zhào

also, if you are counting by "yì" and a billlion is ten "yì" (which is correct) then ten times more than that is 10 billion, or 100 "yì", if you follow my logic. So one hundred "yì" does not make a trillion, only 10 billion.

correct:  十万 One Hundred Thousand [100,000]

correct: 一百万 1 Million [1,000,000]

incorrect 千万 = 10 million (not 1 Billion)

incorrect: 十亿 = 1 Billion (not 1 Trillion)

China's population is 1.4 billion, not 14 billion.

never say never. I don't think we will come to agreement on this, but for what it may be worth, one of my own bad habits that sometimes holds me back is second-guessing the teacher. So just take each podcast for what it is, relax and go with the flow, and trust that you really are learning and progressing.

sorry I did not answer you question directly, Jacob. babyeggplant's answer below is better than mine. I have problems hearing the difference myself, but thought I would give you a shot at it. I was just reading on Sinosplice about all the bad advice on the web about how to generate Mandarin sounds, so I did not dare to try to explain.

Have a look.
