Hi billgloveruk

The 啊 at the end of those sentences adds a little emphasis, or surprise, or even chastising. It affects tone, not meaning.

Generally, women are a little more likely to use those.

Hi marygrace

Studying characters is a fascinating because it quickly evolves from linguistics to history and anthropology. You're right, a lot of words have their origins in rites and religions that few people today understand.

A 戈 ge1 is type of weapon.I have seen it translated as "halberd," but it is different from the halberd that a medieval European would have recognized. My dictionary simply says that this character may have been borrowed for the word "I" for its sound.

戈 Ancient weapon

The traditional character for country guo2 國 also contains this radical, as well as the mouth. "Weapons, people, surrounded by a wall"-- this sounds like a description of a pretty basic city-state.

Hi ancalagon

So happy to hear that you enjoyed the show. It will be published every Tuesday.

Not to kill the excitement, but the next episode will not incorporate feedback, as it was already done when this was released. But I am listening, and looking forward to making the show as good as it can be.

Hi rjberki and urbandweller

I wasn't planning to dress in drag! I just considered that as the theme song, to fade in at the beginning ;-) I only have one singer's costume.

Hi mikeinewshot

Thank you for the kind feedback. You're one of our most demanding critics (and I mean that in the best way!) so I feel good knowing I've passed your test.

Hi xuchen

Wonderful! I really had no idea so many people would like this stuff!

Hi all

I am just delighted by the rush of friendly criticism. Enthusiasm works both ways-- now you've all got me really excited about teaching poetry.

Hi thinkbuddha,

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm fiddling around with the length of the first two episodes, based on feedback. I'm sure we'll reach a good compromise.

Hi brent, calkins, bababardwan, cassielin

You guys are too much ;-)

Hi sammathews99

Thanks for your comments. Most future lessons will be just audio podcasts. But I will definitely keep your suggestion in mind for future videos.

Hi luohaoran and bababardwan

Yes, Chinese are worried about lead in lipstick.
