I quote Connie in : http://chinesepod.com/learnchinese/nationalities Where are you from? : 你是哪的？(Nǐ shì nǎ de?) + other examples from this lesson: 你是哪里人？ 你是哪个国家的？ 你从哪里来？(Nǐ cóng nǎlǐ lái?) or 你从哪儿来? ni3 cong2 nar3 lai2 means : Where do you come from ? Coming from Tokyo doesn't mean that I am Japanese.
