September 24, 2008 at 3:30 PMRich That clarifies something that has been puzzling me for a while! I was in Guangzhou with a Cantonese speaking friend (who also speaks Mandarin). When I asked for the bill ie I thought I was saying 买单, but she said "you are picking up Cantonese". This puzzled me, but I think the explanation is that I erroneously used a second tone instead of a third tone and it came out as 埋单.
