"一" is indeed one of those unmarked tone changes. The written pinyin always reflects the original pronunciation. 一 has a couple of things to note: it's first tone when used alone, second tone when followed by a fourth tone, and fourth tone when followed by any other tone. Qùnián wǒ zài Shànghǎi liú guo sì ge yuè xué.

or

去年我去过上海，我在上海留了四个月学。

Qùnián wǒ qù guo Shànghǎi, wǒ zài Shànghǎi liú le sì ge yuè xué.

Adding "de" to the end of sentences emphasizes an air of certainty within the sentence. "De" is often added in oral Chinese and makes the tone more colloquial. It's ok not to add "de", but it does make the sentence seem a little more formal.
