May 5, 2009 at 10:01 AMChangye can correct me, but I remember reading that Japanese Katakana - the really stylised Japanese alphabet you see in all the shots of Tokyo ("ヨドバシカメラ" "パチンコ" and so on and so forth), were supposedly established by monks studying Buddhism in the 9th Century, who wanted a simpler writing system.
It might not be true, I have no idea where that first came from, but it was certainly an interesting time. Thanks for the poem!

April 30, 2009 at 9:01 AMI was looking at the Beijing Subway map last night - and its great for practicing some basic characters. I nearly never read characters, so for me it was fun.
Even if you never studied chinese, you could make a guess at what the characters were for North South East and West. There are millions of gates (门), roads (路) and mouths (口) too....

The zhǐjīn a bit to the syrup, but that hěnduō helped.
I need to get a handle on different scales of things. Everything I say is a bit hěn- this and a bit nonspecificquantity- that.

wadui and not wàzi...
dui meaning in this case team. What I hadn't realised was that wà means sock without the 子.
hóuzi is another one of those things. The character means monkey, but you never hear it without the 子.
Is this 子 used just to reduce the number of homonyms on the go? Is there much in the way of a rule to this?
Also will people get what I mean if I put down a hanzi book and start saying 'wà' and 'hóu', and dropping the 子 all over the place.

...can you 'fart hear' (at ktv)?
