I love your insights. I always like the words I should avoid... and as a result, I exlusively remember those words.
I have been told to be careful using xiaojie (小姐), erbaiwu (二百五), and airen (爱人).
Thanks for all the mistress vocab :) They all conjour up different kinds of relationships: a 情妇 sounds more fun than a 第三者.

I find it amusing that the same, non simplified version 愛人, has a subtley different meaning in Japanese... being the love person who normally isn't your wife...

July 1, 2009 at 10:45 AMGreat discussuion here guys. I remember hearing about diphones and phonemes. I know that English has about 40 phonemes which correlates to about (40*40) 1600 diphones.
Other european languages probably have masses more.
I don't think I am making anything clearer here, but I hope the numbers are impressive enough that you wont be too daunted by Chinese sounds.
(I love my tones, but I just consider them a flavour of a given pinyin so that allows me to divide any Chinese palette by 4!)
Also, I wilsh I better understood English, because I really feel it would help me with learning Chinese...

As for masumada's observation - I feel a lot of people assume I study it for the hot Chinese girls vinilla-guerilla refers to.
I actually really hate this assumption, predominantly because it is near-impossible to shake off this expectation.

One guy had been to HK twice and ventured into mainland China the second time (B). The other's parents love China (A).
A: My parents love the pure made wee villages and that.
B: China is awright but the foods boggin. If someone asks if you want tea they nip oot an' come back wi a glass o hot water wi' some grass in ut. S'like they went oot the back an jus cut the grass or summin an' dunkied it in the glass an went 'heres yur tea'.
They sounded Dundonian. I also worry that everyone they met whilst travelling think Scottish people are all like that. Though a great deal presumably are.

I would take the yixia to mean 'now'.
Its one of those words I drop because I can convey meaning without it, and I am normally panicing about the next word coming out of my mouth. I suspect it sounds a fair bit more fluent if you leave it in.
Edit: by the time I got to the bottom of the page, Jenny had already answered it... :)
