我们住在城市和近郊的人一直埋怨生活太忙了,不过农民的生活辛苦的很。

“栅栏对过的草总是绿多了” ---- 中文可以这么说吗?:)

"原来我爸爸是个执着的学者!in the context of this story, sounds to me something like "So my father was a driven man--a scholar driven by the (his) need for knowledge!""

Yes, I'm going to open up this three-year-old can of worms! I think the translation given in this lesson is appropriate. Even though "headstrong" has a negative connotation in most cases, describing your father in retrospect as a "headstrong scholar" sounds like an expression of admiration to me. And "headstrong scholar" sounds more colorful and interesting than a dull, lifeless "driven scholar."

Just getting to this lesson. My assumption was that "I'm drinking saliva" was an expression implying that someone wanted something more substantial to drink.

But your explanation makes *much* more senses. :)

I know this is way old, but I'm going to take a stab at the second question. The "了" in 对婚姻没了信心 looks like a change-of-state usage: presumably she has confidence in the marriage now, but if she lets herself be 洗脑ed by all the 八卦,she will no longer have it, thus the 没了.

Here's my best shot at listing all the instruments (roughly clockwise and going outward), with a couple of guesses, as noted:

指挥 zhǐhui - conductor

第一小提琴声部 dìyī xiǎotíqín shēngbù - first violin section

*These were the sort-of guesses. My dictionary lists 双簧管 (shuānghuángguǎn) as double-reed in general, either an oboe or bassoon. And I couldn't find 大官 (dàguǎn) at all, but I'm assuming this is bassoon and 双簧管 (shuānghuángguǎn) is oboe.

Please correct me if I'm wrong!

No problem! I started about a year ago, and it's been there since then at least. Not to rub it in. :)

cinnamonfern, you can put other words in your flashcards by clicking on "Tools" at the top of the page to get to your vocabulary manager, then clicking on "Add Word" (next to where it says "apply label"). Then you could just copy and paste the hanzi, pinyin, and English definition. I do that all the time - hope that's helpful! (Although this one is indeed pretty easy to remember.)
