盐上加盐/yan2 shang4 jia1 yan4/add salt to salt.
There is also a great idiom in Chinese that praises/boasts seniority. It goes like this: I've eaten more rice than you have salt. /我吃过的米比你吃过的盐还多。

When Chinese first learn English, we have the same reaction to 'there is no one inside'.

October 21, 2008 at 7:12 AMThere seems to be an issue with third and forth tone cross the strait. In Taiwan, they say 企业/qi4 ye4/enterprise, but here we say qi3 ye4.

You definitely need to pronounce it as 'shang4'. I listened to the audio, the 师傅said shang4. Maybe it's the distant effect that we added to the speech that's making it not so clear. 出来 is also the correct pronunciation. But the voice actor used a quite natural speed and speaking style. That's why certain individual words when appear in a phrase or a sentence might not sound exactly the same as they do in isolation. It's the same in English, isn't it? Don't get too nervous about that. Be aware of it and train your ears to it.

October 16, 2008 at 3:46 PMoops, double whammy: I meant spring and fall. And 'calendar' not 'calender'.

October 16, 2008 at 3:26 PMBill,
We have a traditional calender known as 'the yellow calender', 黄历/huang2 li4. It has extensive information on how lucky and unlucky each day is, what one should and shouldn't do on that day. When choosing the wedding date, that's what most Chinese base their decision on. While many may not entirely believe in the validaty of the 黄历, they see it as a tradition and auspicious sign that doesn't hurt to keep. Of course, good months of the year also play a big part in it. Spring and summer are favored time of the year. Choosing good dates from these 2 seasons, preferrably a weekend means that there are only so many days which meet all of these requirements. Therefore, the crazy clash of weddings.
