October 29, 2008 at 2:04 AMSomething quite distinguishing about Chinese food is the idea of 'entirety'. We take pride in making an full meal using one key ingredient. For example, at Quanjude, they serve an all-duck feast, where almost every part of the duck is made into a different dish,everything from cold cuts to duck meat dumplings. Right now, it's hairy crab season. Many restaurants in Shanghai have an all crab fair. I personally find the idea a bit aggressive though.

The meaning are the same. 玩/wan2 and 玩儿/wan2 er both mean 'to have fun'. The difference lies in 儿/er. It's a Beijing speech habit, which doesn't alter the meaning of words. You can use or not use it. And there is no fixed rule regarding when you use it. But there are certain words that sound absolutely weird if you add 儿, for example, 吃。So for the time being, don't worry too much about wether to use 儿 or not since it doesn't change the meaning of the words. But to avoid the risk of sounding funny, don't use it.

October 24, 2008 at 6:13 AMI think most of us have first hand experience of communication problems in a cross cultural environment. I've had bosses getting frustrated that he couldn't get his staff openly debate issues and challenge each other. But I think it's fair to say that although our communication style is reserved and evasive, it doesn't mean we are passive or withdrawn.
