That makes it a collector's item.
Much like how cars and houses represented the American dream in the 50's and 60's, TV sets (and appliances in general) defined the China dream beginning in the 80's when China set out on a fundamentally different new path. TV started to be adopted by households. But only those relatively well-to-do in big cities could afford it. And it cost a few months' salary. People used to gather in the home of a TV owner and watched TV together with genuine excitement, envy and hope that they would one day own a TV too. It's an emotional object.

I find security guards there have a very philosophical approach to their job. They look at, nod and smile at you non-committedly. You never know whether they really know who live there and who don't.

November 3, 2008 at 9:02 AM户口还有一个大用处，就是动迁(relocation)给补偿。以前有人一套房子里弄了十几个户口，得到的赔偿金就比较多。现在好像有政策规定不能这样了。

November 3, 2008 at 2:20 AM现在在城市户口最重要的时候就是孩子读书，因为小学和中学是按照户口分配学校的。你户口在哪儿，就在附近的学校上学。所以父母都想尽办法把户口放在学校好的区域。好多人甚至为这个搬家。不过国外好像也有这个情况。不过更多是因为上学方便。不像我们，户口不在这儿，就不能上这里的学校。
