Gambling addiction is 赌瘾/du3 yin3. With words that describe 瘾/yin3/addiction,we often shorten the noun into only one character. For example, 烟瘾/yan1 yin3/smoking addiction, 酒瘾/jiu3 yin3/alcohol addiction.

December 8, 2008 at 5:25 AMI once heard a great joke about trying to get back the money one lent, which is somewhat evocative of reality. The story is pretty much the same as today's lesson, but what happens next is the lender feels awkward about directly asking his money back. He tries to make subtle hints to his friend hoping that he would take the initiative to return the money. But of course he doesn't. So the lender makes multiple visits to his home, each time bringing expensive gifts. A gesture that he hopes will make his friend feel 不好意思 and eventually return his money. But he fails again. So in the end, he not only loses all the money he lent but also the money he spent on gifts.

In Shanghai, restaurants are very busy during Chinese New Year since many families now go out for new year's dinner. But many small restaurants are closed, because owners go home to celebrate new year themselves and their limited menu isn't exactly suited to a lavish new year banquet.

December 4, 2008 at 6:15 AMAt this level, the challenge is more about the subtle nuance of the language. 比如, “苦不苦，想想长征二万五；累不累，想想革命老前辈。”语气是比较调侃的，意思是你觉得自己苦，再苦也比不上长征苦；你觉得自己累，再累也没有革命老前辈累。
语言的感觉是比较抽象的。我回想自己学英语的时候，看美国sitcom，就算大致懂得意思，也不觉得好笑。后来接触更多的英语，才培养出语感。我们chinesepod会帮助大家继续进步的。
