You are talking about the 5 elements, right? 金/ji1/metal, 木/mu4/wood,水/shui3/water, 火/huo3/fire and 土/tu3/earth. So 'earth dragon' would be 土龙。

Agreed. I'd add that stay at home moms are especially the unsung hero. My mom quit her job to go to Singapore with me for my education. Many of her friends envied her back then because she no longer needed to work. But God, the responsibilities she took on at home. She is my hero. Daddy is too.

December 11, 2008 at 5:53 AMWe use several words for coffee shop: 咖啡馆/ka1 fei1 guan3、咖啡店/ka1 fei1 dian4、咖啡厅/ka1 fei1 ting1. They are all correct. The first two are more common.

December 11, 2008 at 5:26 AMShanghai men were traditionally reknowned and mocked for being too good of a husband. It was sort of a norm for them to do a lot of housework while having a full time job at the same time. But just like wearing pyjamas onto the street, this is a dying tradition.

The man in the podcast is doing both 挣钱 (zhèngqián)/making money and 挣扎 (zhēngzhá)/struggling.

This is the place for language discussion. No need to apologise at all. Regarding your questions:
你早上去过哪儿?ni3 zao3shang5 qu4 guo4 nar3 has a completely different connotation. It comes cross as interrogative, something a detective would ask a murder suspect. Verb plus 过 is a very emphatic way to form an open ended question which we don't normally use. For example, 你吃过什么? would seem like you want to know every detail about what one ate and that you have a purpose in finding that out. We'd normally say 你吃了什么. It's softer in tone.
The same applies to your second question. 你给过他东西吗 would sound very interrogative.

December 18, 2008 at 5:53 AMThe very elaborate and imcomprehensible writing on 雷锋's photo reads "向雷锋同志学习"/xiang4 lei2 feng1 tong2 zhi4 xue2 xi2/learn from comrade Lei Feng. It was written by Mao Zedong.
