August 6, 2010 at 2:03 PM主日 literally means " the Lord's Sunday". It's better to use 主日礼拜 to
mean Sunday service. 礼拜 means to worship.

I actually started working at Soulfire because Peter was a ChinesePod listener. Besides shepherding Soulfire and enjoying a cigar or two, he is also a committed learner of Chinese.

August 2, 2010 at 5:52 AMWhile there is some overlapping in the meaning (both mean "can"), 可以 has the meaning of "allowed" and "permitted" whereas 能 is more about the ability to do something.
For example, 我晚上可以去玩吗？/ Am I allowed to go out tonight? You can also use "能" in this sentence, meaning "Can I go out tonight?" but 可以 leaves out any ambiguity.

July 31, 2010 at 7:32 AM心灵 refers more to inner being, matters related to the heart, or you could say the soul. For example, 练瑜伽对心灵很好。/Practicing yoga is good for the soul.
精神 refers to spirit in the sense of physical energy. For example, 你今天精神真好。/You look energetic today.

July 30, 2010 at 8:11 AMYes, it is easy to confuse some of these letters on the phone. And there is no way to pronounce alphabets in Chinese. The best way is to do "b, abc的b", "d, abcd的d". If the Chinese friend speaks English, you can use "b for boy", "d for dog".

"exit #4 down in the station near the bottom of escalator."
四号出口，靠近自动扶梯，楼下。/Sìhào chūhǒu, kàojìn zìdòngfútī, lóuxià.
