I was told by a linguist, many years ago, that the English language is (roughly) evenly mixed between German derived words and French derived words with about 10% coming from other sources; Latin, Greek, and Spanish.

Chicken => German/Poultry => French

Cow => German/Beef => French

There's even some Hindi (Kaki, and thug) and Chinese (Gung ho).

Probably to much info.
