August 23, 2011 at 7:43 PMGenerally: for Grade through High School classes start toward the end of August and end the first week in June. There are exceptions to this. The reason for this arrangement was so the children would be home to help on the farm.
When I went to grade school classes began the first class day after Labor day and ended the last week in May unless snow days were added on. The school day also started at 8 am and ended at 4:30 pm (30 min lunch). This changed by the time I reached high school.

August 23, 2011 at 2:43 AMOrigins of English (Western) months (Blame it on the Romans):
January - Janus's month (Janus is the Roman god of gates and doorways, depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. Janus's festival month)
February - month of Februa (Month for Roman festival of purification)
March - Mars' month (March was the original beginning of the year, and the time for the resumption of war)
April - Aphrodite's month (Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of Love. Venus is the Roman counterpart)
May - Maia's month (Maia, goddess of spring, the daughter of Faunus, and wife of Vulcan.)
June - Juno's month (Juno is the principle goddess of the Roman Pantheon. She is the goddess of marriage and the well-being of women.)
July - Julius Caesar's month
August - Augustus Caesar's month
September - the seventh month
October - the eighth month
November - the nineth month
December - the tenth month
The Romans had an extra month added between Febuary and March which hasn't been kept.
Probably more info than anyone wanted to know.
