June 30, 2007 at 6:11 AMChangye, I'm not aware of those theories, but I love learning new things so I will look into them. Thanks!

June 30, 2007 at 5:05 AMAZERDocMom You're right about the encouragement. For about the first year of learning I was sometimes put off by people laughing at me, or on occasion, when I try to say something, instead of helping, say "speak english, I don't understand your chinese, and I can make my english better." A couple of people copped a mouthful over that. Encouragement is one of the big strengths of this community and biggest helps for anyone trying to speak another language.

June 30, 2007 at 4:32 AMI am impressed by the concept and execution of this lesson, its great idea to do non-scripted. Beginning to sound more like the conversations I overhear everyday (not take part in, those are still labored and most answers are 对 or 啥意思?). I would suggest a non-scritpted lesson with 3 people, so that the crosstalk and thus realism is increased slightly. but you've probably already thought of that :) I greatly respect Chinesepod for the willingness to freely supply the podcast and the transcript (if you download through iTunes). They have no obligation, and there is no right to complain about it. I a greatly honoured to be able to take part in this community, and plan to subscribe when I get around to getting myself a credit card.

June 27, 2007 at 5:37 PMRonInDC- I don't think you quite understand the idea of proposing such a lesson. Sure, there are many areas that definitely should be left to street learning, and an actual encounter would be one of those things. I mearly think it is a good idea to have people aware of what to expect here, The midnight phonecalls to hotel rooms, the "hairdresser" that offers additional services, etc. I have heard many stories of people getting into difficult situations due to ignorance. That being said, I don't think we will be seeing prositiution as a topic anytime soon, its just a bit too riskay. The gun lesson was cool but more pop culture than edgy (you see that type of thing on TV all the time).

June 27, 2007 at 8:36 AMI can't see information on prostitution in China as going too far. It is a major issue that everyone who comes here has to deal with at some point. Wheather its noticing when the hairdresser you are about to go into is just a front, or dealing with the particually pushy attempt to sell to you on the street.

June 27, 2007 at 2:49 AMIts worth noting that Changye's dog is not an eating dog (too scrawny and hairy). Besides many chinese don't eat dog, where I am most have never eaten it and seem disgusted at the thought (though I have still seen dog in tyhe markets). Seems to be mainly a southern thing. Two spring festivals ago I was in a small town in ZheJiang, spent a week being served such delicacies as dog and turtle (when theres nothing else to eat what are you going to do?). But I did draw the line at pigs bowel!

June 26, 2007 at 10:46 AMChangye Most of the signs I found were in small tourist towns in the west, where they are wary of all foriegners, so don't be too worried. However I have come across a couple of people before who, when I mentioned I had Japanese friends, said something along the lines of "but how could you, they are such aweful people." This is rare and most people seem content with passive dislike.

June 26, 2007 at 10:31 AMThis is one of the more hilarious discussions I have read/taken part in on here in a long time kudos to everyone, and its not politically correct. I actually agree with Bill (though not so domatically). I don't think he was directing at the podcast (were you?) but using it to make a comment on society in general as these type of attitudes are still pervalent. Also note I was using sex as a term to cover sexist, gender roles, and actual sex, as these are linked. P.S. I'm not a merry can.
