If you use Firefox as your browser, and as how other posters likewise did for me, I highly recommend using a wonderful free, easy to install plug-in that will automatically look up a word or character and subsequently display, with a high degree of certainty, its pinyin and definition ... just by pointing to the word or character in question: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3349 As a bona fide elementary and wannabe intermediate, I find this tool absolutely indispensable when trying to read the many character-only posts found in these lesson discussions. 再見， 何睿林

February 2, 2008 at 3:28 AMHi Connie, Yes, that makes it a lot clearer! I think my confusion centers around an implied but not stated head word (中心詞) as identified by the hanging 的. In your example, 我愛的 is an attributive (定語) of an unstated person. So if I wanted to be more verbose could I think I could add a 人 for the implied head word: 我愛的人是你。 Translated literally, "The person I love is you." If this is correct, I would think I could also expand the expansion section sentence 我爱的不是别人,就是你 similarly by again adding another 人 for the implied head word： 我愛的人不是別人，就是你。 A direct translation being: "The person I love is not other people, its just you." 再見， 何睿林

February 2, 2008 at 1:52 AMConcerning the expansion section sentence: 我愛的不是别人，就是你。 (wo3 ai4 de bu4 shi4 bie2 ren2, jiu4 shi4 ni3) It is translated as "Its not the other people I love, its just you." The 1st phrase completely baffles me syntactically, specifically the placement of 不是 here. I understand that that the clause: 我愛的別人 (wo3 ai4 de bie2 ren2) means "The other people I love", so I would have put the 不是 in front of this clause to say not the other people I love: 不是我愛的別人 Grammar gurus out there please help explain what's going on here ... thanks 再見， 何睿林
