Actually when I first visited the US in 1988, it took me a while to understand that "bathroom" and "restrooms" are euphemisms for the word I learned in school for that class of locations: "toilet". This made the distinction between 洗手间 and 厕所 very clear for me later. It follows the same logic. Even if there is no provisions whatsoever to wash your hands (water, baisin,..), it can be a 洗手间. Just as there is often nothing that comes close to a "bath" in a "bathroom".

licha, I just picked up the perfect piece vocab: 狗拿耗子多管闲事 And as you so ardently love pinyin: here, just for you: gǒu ná hàozi duō guǎnxiánshì (learned a lot of mouse related vocab recently)

To re-fuel the debate. I just had a phone conversation with my wife and she used the following to describe the current behaviour of our son: 耗子扛枪窝里横 :o

翻译时失踪了吗? (可以这样表达Lost in Translation?) 我根本不懂今天的科。 "撒娇"到底是不是whining的意思? 难道有一些中国人认为这种行为包括一个好点。 我两孩儿平常撒娇 ("我要吃糖", "给我买比萨饼", "明天才睡觉去", "出去玩儿"什么的), 烦死我们。 无论是女的还是男的,成人会怎么作我一点也不了解。

My son got the set that you bought, Bazza. Plus several individual ones in various sizes. They always need to sit next to his bed at night otherwise he won't go to sleep. He also talked his grandmother into buying him a set of Fuwa-DVDs which I so far managed to keep away most of the time. The shows are highly action oriented, Japanese style (Fuwas defend the spirit of Olympia). Better watch some "Maja the Bee". Only with Chinese genes can you like those tiny monsters.

Danny, 我使用的是谷歌拼音, 非常满意。 不过,有没有苹果电脑版本我不知道。 (I use Google Pinyin and am very satisfied with it - But I don't know if there is a Mac version). Also check: http://chinesepod.com/lessons/%E8%BE%93%E5%85%A5%E6%B3%95/

light, I deinstalled that kind of tools very quickly - they are simply to convenient. Those extra seconds to copy & paste the characters into your electronic dictionary are valuable for actively thinking about the possible meaning of a character or a word. It is a booster for long-term retention.
