July 25, 2007 at 6:02 AMEnglish lesson again :) "Spelunking". Very interesting word. In German there is the noun "Spelunke" which denotes a shabby pub or hotel that is visited by dubious folks. http://www.dwds.de/?kompakt=1&qu=Spelunke Probably no coincidence. That meaning is pretty close to "cave", isn't it. Probably those two share same ethymology. Sorry for the off-Chinese post ;)

July 23, 2007 at 3:14 PMphilochen, ü and u are different vowels. The umlaut has no relation to the tones - those are independent. The umlaut-u is pronounced just like it would be in German. For a direct comparison of u and ü go to the pronounciation section and download the Pinyin Chart.

July 23, 2007 at 8:00 AMSorry for so many comments & questions on this lessons, but my old friend, the 了 is back! In the Exercises I was supposed to select the correct alternative from the following: 1) 你真的冤枉他了,他这么晚回来是因为他去给你买礼物了。 2) 你真的冤枉他了,他这么晚回来是因为他去给你买了礼物。 My question is: *Why* is the second sentence wrong?

July 23, 2007 at 6:02 AMWord usage: can I also use 玩弄 with concepts, theories, or ideas? 我和这个理论玩弄了 我把这个注意玩弄玩弄 In the sense of "I played around with the thought/idea (in my mind)"?

July 23, 2007 at 5:56 AMI still miss two important pieces of vocab: How would you say - "Alternative Ending" and - "Parallel Universe" in Chinese. Especially the last one is necessary in everyday conversation. I think. :)

July 23, 2007 at 5:53 AMThis isn't an alternative ending. The show fits neetly between "Uncomfortable Encounter in a Bar" and "It's Over". Actually "It's Over" makes more sense with this one.
