September 22, 2007 at 6:59 AMMy wife claims to hear if a foreigner comes from an English, French or German speaking nation when she or her speak Chinese - although she cannot distinguish e.g. between American and British or between Bavaran and Kölsch. My mother in law on the other hand said they all sound the same to her (but she had less contact with foreigners than her daughter).

September 22, 2007 at 3:27 AMchangye, each year I see more and more motorcycles, mopeds, and motor-assisted bicycles filling the streets, almost outnumbering the "classic" bicycles. From what I saw those 4 days in Shanghai even more so than in Beijing. In my opionion they make traffic not easier, breathing not easier, and their owners not fitter.
