Sorry to have to bump this post so quickly. The reason: When someone sees the link on the Community Page, they will be taken to the most recently posted comment, which is under another thread further up the page. Because this is an old lesson, I doubt anyone would think of scanning for other posts, and mine will be lost.

Anyway, can anyone answer my question above?

This is not really for Mike, because he doesn't seem to visit anymore. Listed above is the word jīngzhì meaning exquisite. Unfortunately, he has the characters wrong. I looked this up in a dictionary, and there are two words with the same pinyin, and almost identical meanings: 精致 and 精制. Does anyone know whether they are completely interchangeable. If not, which one is meant here?

Just wanted to bring these questions to the surface again.

Two Questions:

1. (has been hinted at already, but not asked directly or answered)

Some of the example sentences did not end in ma. Is ma optional? If not, in what circumstances should it be used, and when not?

2. What is the Mandarin term for 'rhetorical question'?

[Its good to see we now have a 'delete' option for our comments. However, I see that the 'edit' option does not allow formatting or 'Convert to Tone Marks' any more. Also the timing issue has not yet been fixed - ie. the time since the comment was made starts at 5 minutes, decreases to zero, then starts counting upwards from zero.]

Well we use Leibniz' calculus today, so I guess he won. Having had a brief glance at Newton's calculus, it looks a little difficult to use. But I guess Leibniz' work has been polished over the centuries by other mathematicians, whereas Newton's work is in its raw form. Does anyone know, did anyone take hold of Newton's work and use it?

It probably took me 6 months to regularly pick up the tones in single characters. Probably 12 months to pick up the tones in two-character words. Its been 2 years, and I still have difficulty picking up the tones of words in sentences, especially when spoken quickly.

I think the best thing to do is to focus on the vocabulary. Practise saying each new word a few times with the correct tone, then move on.

Another one:

The nickname for MacDonalds in Oz is Maccas.

(I don't think I've seen it written down before, so I'm not sure how to spell it.)

I believe MacDonalds is called something like Mickie Dees in the States.

Does it have a nickname is England?

Jenny

No need for apologies. It wasn't a major inconvenience for me. Just trying to help you iron out some of these little bugs.

Cpod

When you go to the 'Full List' in the Newbie Lessons, and select the lesson 'Taxi Conversations: Small Talk", you are directed instead to this similarly named lesson: "Taxi Small Talk".

The problem only occurs in the full list - there is no problem with the more detailed Newbie List.

I've noticed this same problem another pair of similarly named lessons, but I can't remember which ones they were.
