June 21, 2008 at 4:49 AM我以前跟课的人物一样觉得我“太成熟了”，不要看哈利·波特。反而，去年我决定看一本中文小说，不知道要看什么好，所以我挑了中文版的哈利·波特与魔法石，因为觉得应该不太难。没想到，我非常喜欢故事。看完了以后我立刻去买其它的哈利·波特书，意想不到地成为了粉丝。
我建议，如果你是个想看中文小说的中高级学生，，你可以式式看第一部哈利·波特。虽然还是会有很多新词，不过应该可以看懂大概的意思。

June 4, 2008 at 8:52 AMThanks amphivera, changye, and howard97 for all the feedback. Mystery solved! I think I can understand the 'shou-er-ites' wanting to change the 汉-related words. It's great that the Chinese government and media were willing to change the name - a kind of 'linguistic' diplomacy.

June 4, 2008 at 4:51 AMWhy was the previous Chinese name for Korea '汉城'/'han4cheng2' ? That seems to literally translate to 'Chinese city' or 'Han city'.
From a quick search on Wikipedia, one of the older names for Seoul was Hanseong (in the Korean language) and China continued to use the transliteration of the old name. That seems fine, but why use the character '汉'/han4 instead of the '韩‘/'han2' used in the Chinese word for 'Korea' which is '韩国'/'han2guo2' and other words related to Korea (e.g. '韩语',韩剧',etc).
I'm not too familiar with the history between Korea and China, but is there a historical reason here?

I agree with guolanusa - need to increase the font size in the 'posting box', especially for Chinese characters. Really difficult to distinguish characters.
Also, there seems to be a mistake in the English translation for one of the expansion sentences. "姚明投进了吗？" should be "Did Yao Ming make the shot?'

That's an interesting point you make about how Chinese sometimes classifies words differently from English. I think I've noticed that before with other words.
By the way, what do you mean by 'isolating language'?
