This is not that unusual. The employment opportunities are more dynamic in China, evidently. We often have employees quit a good steady manufacturing job to work for a relative, start their own business, or go to a seemingly less prestigious position that pays more. I also find it odd that many seem to quit before they get their plans ironed out.

…and add 地。I remember my teacher telling me that distinguishing how to use these three was elementary school level stuff.

When I first moved to Shanghai, everybody was having their clothes made at the Bund Fabric market. One of the tailors we were using told us that the rent there was doubling and tripling every year so he moved elsewhere. There are tailors everywhere if you look. You can buy a good custom made shirt for 75-100 RMB and maybe get a discount if you order several at one time. Don't bargain too much. If you get the price too low, they will send the order to a lower cost(usually lower quality)factory.

Another excellent dose of vocab. Buying bread and pastries in China is risky. It might look good, but that doesn’t mean it will taste good. I am used to the “less sweet” regional recipes for dounuts such as Mr. Donut, just avoid the rice flour versions.

November 14, 2012 at 11:49 PM

One of my workers had twins last year. It is common for the grandparents to watch after kids in the home province while the younger generation works full time away from home. In this case, two babies were too much for grandma to handle. So one lives with the mother in Shanghai and one lives with the dad and grandmother in Anhui. They switch babies every month or so.

How would you say “She gave birth to twins last year” 她去年生了双胞胎?

Somewhere in Shanghai there is a store that sells professional beggar's clothes. Some of those patchwork jackets are just too elaborate and "authentic" to be true.

Seems like my chinese friends often get scammed by their former classmates.  In America we are more used to getting scammed by our relatives.
