After the "Leggy Joke"(worst lesson ever), I was a little worried about listening to this.

Just had a lesson that used 不过 as an adverb(only, no more than), and to add emphasis to an adjective. I had only thought of it as a conjunction before.

In Shanghai, the locals always ask if you own your own apartment or villa. They are not impressed if you are renting, even if it is a McMansion.

Yes, I remember the early days in a one room apartment in a seedy part of town cooking a package of macaroni and cheese for dinner. Of course my children could never be expected to suffer such a fate.

Actually, donkey meat tastes very good. It is just hard to get used to the thought of eating it. On a business trip, I was treated to it on successive days in Shandong province, and then in Shanxi. While visiting Pingyao on the way to the airport in Taiyuan, we stopped in the butcher shop and our hosts bought each of us a 5 pound hunk to take back to Shanghai. Neither my driver or my Ayi was interested when I offered it to them.

我也去过平遥。他们的面食吃的很好。平遥牛肉?我们吃过驴肉。

The only possible reason for this that I can imagine is that the Ayi's use this as an additional source of income. No wonder she could afford that new scooter.

Sounds like my water delivery guy. I found the actual store one day, only three blocks away. The 麻将 table and video poker makes me question the excuses for late deliveries. Also unfortunately found out that you can buy fake Nestle water for 2 RMB less than real Nestle water.

Congratulations on 2000 lessons. I know one problem is that as you expand into specialized topics, it limits the audience that is interested in them. Good luck. Going through some of the older lessons is like watching the 70's Show.

这边吃,还是带走?dàizǒu. When I first heard this I thought they were asking me if I needed a bag 袋子 dài zi. Most often heard at McDonalds and the like.

哈哈。Yes, yak butter takes some getting used to. Seeing a goat butchered 5 feet from my table was also different. Fresh vegetables also were not too plentiful.

The Chinese will also warn you that any city or province other than their own is "dangerous".
