I really did not believe people would use the term “恐龙”, but I have heard it used often, especially after one exits an elevator. Also, unfortunately, I heard someone comment on a business associate with that term(they thought she was my date and were insulting me). Beware the wrath of the wai guo ren who listens to Chinesepod.

So many interesting and useful words in one lesson(words that I would never ask my Mandarin teacher about!). I think I just watched a Chinese soap opera episode about this on CCTV. Pretty girl, ... disgusting older man with high standards.

QW is the best. I am 16 lessons from completing the series. Keep it light and keep it interesting. Some of the Intermediate topics scare me off,我怕无聊的东西!I'll save the heavier stuff for my Mandarin teacher.

My grandfather used to say "For crying out loud!" as an expression of exasperation or to say "that is enough". I think I will start saying “为哇哇大哭!”in an appropriate situation to see what kind of response I get.

The Pudong aquarium is very good. I go there at least once a year. I am always amazed at how expensive these venues are. It makes you wonder if the 老百姓 can get some sort of discount to attend.

Some useful new words and interesting everyday context. My gym's previous 瑜伽老师

has been my Mandarin teacher for the past two years, but that is another story.

OK, now I understand the real importance of the 发票。My apologies to the Finance Department. Many times you have to pay more if you want a 发票. By the way, I have never won any money on a scratch off.

5000 rmb would be a reasonable base salary for Shanghai area, + OT. Current OT is about 16 rmb/hr for weekdays, 25 rmb for weekends, and 35 rmb for Holidays. Many expats hire a 司机 and car as a package. Base rate is about 15000 per month, but with the extras like tolls, out of town, excess mileage, and OT, you are looking at 20,000 rmb per month.

Yes, too many characters. When I first came to China someone told me if you knew 2000 characters you could read a newspaper. When I had learned about 1800 I got a second opinion. Someone said 4000 charcters is OK for normal life. When I was at around 3200 I asked some else. They said a college student probably knows 8000+. Of course, most "words" are a combination of characters. Job security for Chinesepod.
