知道了,麻烦您，还有一个问题; it seems that the use of "给" is flexible. One of my friends wrote "麻烦你给复印出来" (asking me to print out a hotel reservation for her). I didn't understand whether she meant print it out or give (给) me a copy, so when we met I asked her about it and she said 麻烦你给它复印出来. Thus 给它复印 means print it out, right?
给它复印(出来) print it out (gei3 + pronoun + verb)
给我打开 help me to open (gei3 + pronoun + verb)
My mother tounge doesn't have that kind of flexibility so I'm confused as ever :)
I just wanted to ask: strictly logically (gei3 + pronoun + verb) would imply the meaning open me up, right? But the chinese language is flexible so due to context we conclude that it means help me to open?

July 17, 2009 at 8:02 AMThanks Connie! Now, I happened to think about "给". What about these sentences: 谢谢你给我打开 xiexie ni gei wo dakai, 谢谢你给我批改 xiexie ni gei wo pigai. Are those OK or would they mean "opening me" and "correcting me" (as opposed to correcting my exam/writing)?

In the expansion sentences we have "谢谢你帮我打开"。xie4xie5 ni3 bang1 wo3 da3kai1.
I have learned that "thanks for correcting (my writing)" is 谢谢你的批改。 xie4xie5 ni2de5 pi1gai3.
Since da3kai1 and pi1gai3 both are verbs; is it also correct to say "谢谢你的打开"?? xiexie nide pigai

I too don't have a thorough explanation but the pattern is very common indeed. There are two episodes of QW that deal with how to use dou1. Here are some examples from those QW's. (I hope I got them right...)
这些东西都是我的。zhe4xie1 dong1xi5 dou1 shi4 wo3 de5. All of these things are mine.

July 13, 2009 at 10:31 PMHmm, maybe I got it all wrong, but I'm actually cool with the new policy. At least if it means there will be more language related questions answered in the comment section. I could use the message feature to PM a CPod staff memeber every time I have question related to language, but I prefer releasing it on the board. I do believe that others will learn from my questions (and the corresponding answers), just as I learn from other poddies' questions. That should save some time for the CPod staff as well; instead of answering the same question many times they would do it once, and everyone could read it on the board.
But maybe I got it all wrong, really.
