barbhong, I agree, the characters are very small. They can be made larger though. Just press [ctrl] and [+] on your keyboard. That's a bit ma2fan though, since some parts of the panel will go outside the computer screen. Larger characters by default, would be nice.

I once had a mouse in my apartment. I was a bit too eager to get it out of there, so I pulled the trigger of my .22cal PCP airgun without doing too much thinking. The pellet (after terminating the mouse) ended up in the wooden panelling, just missing the copper piping that provided my kitchen radiator with hot water. Phew... Don't try that at home folks :)

Hi all!

Here's the chinese parts of today's QW. I haven't studied how to use the different de particles (的/地/得) so you should take those with a pinch of salt! My punctuation is bad too.

Please comment my mistakes if you find any. I'd also like to know this sentence 比较小的。。。比较家常比较_ _ _那种 at 3:42.

Copy/paste the entire text to this website to read pinyin and translation.

其实我们有很多叫法。
fanguan
我们就从刚刚Mark说的那些开始吧。
他说了饭馆儿。
在那里你可以吃凡也可以吃菜也可以喝酒。。。还可以喝汤,什么都有。
caiguan
那菜馆和饭馆是一样的。
guan
馆呢就是一个地方。
北方人经常用。
饭馆儿,菜馆儿。
canguan
还有餐馆儿。
也是一样的。你可以吃饭可以喝酒。
所以有饭菜馆餐馆意思都是一样的。
fandian
我们经常说饭店。
canting
那还有餐厅。
那餐厅一般是比较贵的。
(fanguan,caiguan,canguan)
比较小的。。。比较家常比较_ _ _那种。
jiulou
比较高级的。。。酒楼。。。那你也可以吃饭也可以喝酒。
很贵很贵啊。
shitang
那个你可以叫食堂。
(most common)
我觉得是饭店。
jiuba
可以去酒吧。
那酒吧你可以喝很多的酒。
fandian
那你可以去饭店。
但有的饭店也可以...睡觉。
binguan
最常用的是什么呢?
是宾馆。
一般是比较贵的。
jiudian
酒店。
是比较大的,比较贵的。
对,没有。我们可以说卖酒的商店。
lvguan
这个呢我们叫旅馆。
旅游。
青年旅馆。
shangwu jiudian
我们一般叫作商务酒店。
zhaodaisuo
招待所。
招待,我们会招待客人。
那所呢也是一个地方。
...
在有的学校里有招待所。
...

Hi inland,

nciku has some information on yidian:

有一点 [yǒuyìdiǎn]
  1. 1. a touch of;a little

The typing tool in www.mdbg.com also recognizes 一点儿: "a bit/ a little".

If I got things right, 一点儿 and 一点 is exactly the same thing. It's just that people from the northern part of China like to add an extra 儿.

Chinese doesn't need a 是 shi4 in front of the adjective. The simplest sentence structure may be subject+adjective: 他胖 Ta1 pang4 He is fat. In swedish and english we must use "is" to make the sentence correct, but that is not needed in chinese. However, subject+是+noun is correct, e.g. 他是中国人 ta1 shi4 zhong1guo2ren2 He is Chinese.

I'm still a bit confused about those sentence-ending particles...

! Hao3 kun4 a! I'm so sleepy!

小鱼什么? Xiao3yu2 ai4 chi1 shen2me ya? What does the little fish like to eat?

当然帅哥!Dang1ran2 shi4 shuai4ge1 lo! Handsome guys of course!

Do those particles have different meanings or are they chosen because they fit smoothly into the flow of the sentence?
(E.g. I don't think shen2me a have the same flow as shen2me ya. Likewise, shuai4ge1 lo flows better than shuai4ge1 ya, e and lo sounding more similar to each other than e and ya.)

Arghh, I got the pinyin tones screwed up in the previous post.
