September 20, 2007 at 5:24 AMI think laoshi is teacher, while jiaoshi is professor, but the distinction might be a bit more fluid than in English.

September 18, 2007 at 10:57 PMMy student from Shanghai tells me that dushu means only study, while kanshu can mean either read or look at books or study. Strange as it sounds to American ears, one can make an appointment (yuehua) with one's boyfriend. Yuehua apparently means appointment or date. While I could have a date with my mom, I'd never have an appointment with er. So interesting use of the term appointment in Mandarin. Tan lian ai seems to mean only "dating" in the quasi-romantic sense. So that's my preliminary take on the difference in nuances here but I'm happy to be corrected by our friends at cpod.

September 18, 2007 at 3:33 PMIs there a difference in nuance between yuehui and tan lian ai (both translate as "dating"?) Difference in meaning between kanshu and du shu (both translated as studying)?

September 17, 2007 at 3:17 PMWell-pitched and well-taught lesson. Challenging but not impossibly so. I hope that JiaJia wins the contest but dropping in some classical, learned references into her blog. However, I worry that Jessica and Monica are the type to hire Ninjas to elminate the competition!

September 14, 2007 at 2:55 PMI liked the way you talked about staying "in shape" in this lesson and then we got an elementary are "xing1zhuang4" or basic shapes. Good to have the vocab overlap.

September 12, 2007 at 3:07 PMWell, Peter didn't deserve to die. But I guess this lesson just goes to show that Peter should have walked away from the deal the minute he learned that his partner Mr. Li was corrupt.

September 10, 2007 at 3:01 AMI remember reading years ago that the characters for jiejie depict a woman sitting in front of a mirror. Or is the second character more of an altar rather than a mirror?

September 21, 2007 at 3:44 AMWhy does Godzilla come from Japan? Xenophobia? Or was Godzilla originally some kind of manga? Don't know much about this monster but I'm really enjoying these inventive intermediate lessons.
